Talk:Armor Piercing (5e Variant Rule)
From D&D Wiki
I'm confused on a major part of this rule. It's written at the end that-
"The AC penalties do not stack together."
However, you've also written that higher tiers of Armor Piercing have the benefits of the lower tiers, such as Armor Piercing (-3), which says "...in addition to the benefits of armor piercing (-1) and (-2)." If this doesn't imply that the penalties stack, then what does it mean? Vobria (talk) 15:23, 1 September 2018 (MDT)
- The way the page is worded makes the mechanical effects of the property confusing, but I will try and do my best to explain how this variant rule works. As a whole, the armor piecing properties beyond -1 just have the benefits of each of the armor piecing properties before it. A somewhat straightforward example behind how the variant rule works is having a weapon with armor piercing (-2). Such a weapon would have the three main properties:
- Targets with natural armor or worn armor and an AC of 14 or better take a -1 penalty to AC.
- Targets with natural armor or worn armor and an AC of 16 or better take a -2 penalty to AC.
- These benefits do not stack.
- So if you are attacking a creature with an AC of 17 you would get the -2 AC benefit so there AC would be treated as 15, where if you are attacking a creature with an AC of 14 you would only get the benefits of the -1 AC penalty to AC.--Blobby383b (talk) 14:29, 2 September 2018 (MDT)
- That is correct. Marasmusine (talk) 16:57, 25 March 2019 (MDT)
