Population[edit]

The world of Tokyo Ghoul is very similar to our world, as humans are the dominant specie but another one is present and very much alive: the ghouls. Ghouls are a carnivorous and cannibalistic humanoid species that are only able to feed on the flesh of humans and other ghouls. They normally share and display the same attributes as Humans; being similar in physical appearance and intelligence as a human, with the main exceptions being their inner biology, mentality, and diet. If certain rare conditions are met, ghouls and humans may even be able to have offspring, and through a successful kakuhou transplant surgery, an artificial hybrid can be created. A one-eyed ghoul, also called half-ghoul, is a human-ghoul hybrid who possesses a ghoul's abilities. Most ghouls treat their existence as an urban legend or have never heard of their existence at all. One-eyed ghouls earn their name from the single kakugan(the black and red eye that manifests in a ghoul while their powers are active) they possess, in contrast to normal ghouls. Some individuals are noted to have a unique scent that combines traits of a human and a ghoul, identifying them as different and often considered "enticing" by certain ghouls. Rumors state that hybrids are more powerful than ordinary ghouls due to hybrid vigor, though it has not been further elaborated on. Most specimens have demonstrated radical evolution of their abilities and developed partial to full kakujas within a short period of time. Physically, their bodies are identical to that of a ghoul with the same resistance to harm and ability to use a kagune. Dr. Shiba claims that the more half-ghouls and Quinx get hurt, the more their basic abilities will increase. Artificial one-eyed ghouls can only consume flesh of human or ghoul origin like normal ghouls and thus they are strictly a cannibalistic organism. However, natural one-eyed ghouls like Eto are able to taste and consume human food without negative effects. A half-human is a human-ghoul hybrid with mostly human-like traits. They are specimens with mixed blood from the copulation of a ghoul and a human. Like humans, they cannot manifest kagune nor kakugan and are able to consume normal food. However, they differ from humans in their superhuman strength and accelerated aging rate that causes a shortened lifespan. By using airborne-transmitted diseases like those utilized by Furuta Washuu, the condition known as ROS (an overload of RC cells) can lead to artificial ghoulification. Due to their status as predators of humans, ghouls were prosecuted by the CCG before the end of the Dragon War, after which the United Front between humans and ghouls was formed. As a result of this and the development of synthetic food, ghouls were allowed to co-exist with humans. However, some ghouls went rogue, refusing to adapt to this new lifestyle. In addition, it was predicted by Kishou Arima that at some stage every human would eventually become a ghoul, though this prediction has yet to be proven correct. A Quinx is a human or half-human with a restrained kakuhou installed in their body. Since Quinx are able to produce a kagune, they can potentially be mistaken for ghouls and one-eyed ghouls. Quinx are similar to one-eyed ghouls in that they only develop one kakugan, in contrast to normal ghouls who develop kakugan in both eyes. When activating the kakugan, the Quinx have a grey sclera in the affected eye instead of black like normal and one-eyed ghouls. Quinx only digest human food and they do not crave human flesh like half-ghouls and normal ghouls do. Even so, devouring human flesh still triggers responses from their Rc cells, increasing the overall abilities of a Quinx. Quinx are shown to possess increased physical traits similar to those of ghouls, such as enhanced strength and agility, though this appears to vary greatly from individual to individual. A heightened sense (i.e, smell, hearing, sight) is typical, and healing abilities on par with those of a ghoul are possible side effects of the surgery. The Quinx surgery was created after Ken Kaneki was examined by the CCG after his capture.

Society[edit]

The society in the Tokyo Ghoul francise is one of fear,as the human fear to be eaten by ghouls, and ghoul fear to be exterminated by humans. Most humans see any kind of ghoul, pure-blooded, one eyed or even Quinx, as a violent and dangerous monster; as most ghouls see any human as either prey, entertainment or exterminator. But there are some exceptions: some humans, either because their loved one are ghouls or simply because they care about their rights, support ghouls and would like to see them as part of their society; in the way as some ghouls don't like to kill to get their food, so they decide to collect copses of people who committed suicide and in some cases even help humans in trouble. The true turning point will come after the Dragon War, when the CCG is replaced by the United Front. As a result of this and the development of synthetic food, ghouls were allowed to co-exist with humans. However, some ghouls went rogue, refusing to adapt to this new lifestyle.
