Silver Tongue[edit]

Surrounded by children, a young man holds a picture book in one hand, making exaggerated gestures with the other. The children smile and scream, enthralled by the story being read to them. To an average onlooker, it appears to be a normal reading to the youth. But to the children, the story is true. The scents of the story flood their nostrils, the localized breeze centered on their group, and sitting at the young mans feet, a small puppy that had not been there only moments before. For the young man was no mere story teller, he was a Silver Tongue.

Muses of Ink and Reality[edit]

A Silver Tongue is a Charisma based class that focuses on reading the written word. Class features will enable different effects when written words are read aloud, allowing for a creative and imaginative set of possibilities between the player and the DM. At low levels, these features will be rather restrained, but build up to the ability to read the very fabric of reality.

Disclaimer[edit]

Please note, this class was created specifically for a homebrew campaign and was made with collaboration between the DM and player. If you intend to use this class, please make sure you talk it over with your DM as this class has a very open-ended play style that will take a lot of creativity from both the player and the DM.

Descriptive Magic[edit]

By reading the description of magical effects out loud, you can replicate the spell being described. Spells cast in this way do not require the Somatic component, but all spells will have a Verbal component instead. Material components still apply. Additionally, you may cast spells from any class spell list, but a clear description of the spell must be written for you to read from. The monetary cost and any skill requirements to obtain written descriptions of spells will be up to your DMs discretion. Your DM may rule that descriptions are not detailed enough to function or may be flawed and function other than intended.

Words of Power[edit]

Whenever a Silver Tongue utilizes their abilities to read an object, effect, or creature from writing, there is a chance that a nearby object, effect, or creature of equivalent impact is taken from reality and sent into the World of Ink. Due to the nature of this ability, no set chance is set. This feature will be up to your DM on how they would like to implement it.

Spellcasting[edit]

Cantrips

At 1st level, choose any two cantrips from any spell list. You begin with scrolls with accurate descriptions of the cantrips transcribed upon them. If you have a journal to start, you may opt to have the journal hold the cantrips instead. You may add additional cantrips to your journal, or obtain additional cantrip transcriptions, through the above Descriptive Magic feature.

Spell Slots

The Silver Tongue table shows how many spell slots you have. The table also shows what the level of those slots is; all of your spell slots are the same level. TO cast one of your spells of 1st level or higher, you must expend a spell slot. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest. For example, when you are 5th level, you have two 3rd-level spell slots. To cast the 1st-level spell witch bolt, you must spend one of those slots and you cast it as a 3rd-level spell.

Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher

At 1st level, choose two 1st level spells from any spell list. You begin with scrolls with accurate descriptions of the spells transcribed upon them. If you have a journal to start, you may opt to have the journal hold the spells instead. You may add additional spells to your journal, or obtain additional spell transcriptions, through the above Descriptive Magic feature.

Spellcasting Ability

Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your Silver Tongue spells, so you use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a Silver Tongue spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one. Spell Save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier Spell Attack Modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

Spellcasting Focus

If you have a journal that holds only spells, you may designate it as a grimoire and utilize it as a spellcasting focus for your Silver Tongue spells.

Literary Emendations[edit]

In your study of written literature, you've discovered potential for emendations, corrections or revisions to text for a desired outcome. Through your gift as a Silver Tongue, these emendations can stretch to affect reality at varying degrees. At 2nd level, you gain two literary emendations of your choice. Your emendation options are detailed at the end of the class description. When you gain certain Silver Tongue levels, you gain additional emendations of your choice, as shown in the Emendations Known column of the Silver Tongue table. Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the emendations you know and replace it with another emendation that you could learn at that level.

Reading Focus[edit]

At 3rd level, you chose a Reading Focus. Choose between Realistic Reader, Evocative Reader, and Revisionist Reader, all detailed at the end of the class description. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th and 14th.

Ability Score Improvement[edit]

When you reach 4th level, and again at 8th, 12th, 16th and 19th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

Comprehensive Reading[edit]

Starting at 5th level, whenever you spend at least 10 minutes studying a script in an unknown language, you begin to piece together the language enough to read it. When you use this feature, you can read any written language that you can see, but you must be touching the surface on which the words are written. It takes about 1 minute to read one page of text.

Eidetic Memory[edit]

Starting at 5th level, you have developed an eidetic memory. This feature allows you to accurately recall anything you have seen or heard within the past month.

World Script[edit]

Starting at 9th level, the fabric of the world around you appears to be made of minute text. As an action, you can study an inanimate object or space within 5ft of you to make out the words that describe that inanimate object or space you are looking at. This feature is enhanced beginning at 13th level to be able to make out the text of animate objects or living beings as well.

Embellishment[edit]

Starting at 9th level, you have learned to embellish the words you read. When reading aloud, you may insert or alter a singular adjective to your reading to affect the outcome. The effect will depend on the adjective used and is at your DMs discretion.

Infused Ink[edit]

At 11th level, you've discovered a way to infuse ink with your power. However, the power infused into the ink seems to be connected to you and is a limited resource. Choose any spell 6th level or lower. You may transcribe it onto a scroll or into a journal/grimoire. You can cast a spell written with Infused Ink once without expending a spell slot. You must finish a long rest before you can do so again. At higher levels, you are able to produce more infused ink to bind to additional spells to be cast in this way. A 7th level or lower spell can be transcribed at 13th level, an 8th level or lower spell can be transcribed at 15th level, and a 9th level or lower spell can be transcribed at 17th level.

Door of Ink[edit]

At 18th level, your will can alter reality to a point of creating a stable door between reality and the World of Ink. You can alter the World Script of any door you can touch to open up into a written world instead. Discuss with your DM for possible gameplay arcs to use with this feature. Otherwise, this feature could be used to allow for a safe haven, a training ground, or perhaps used to force an enemy into a different locale for some strategic purposes. This feature is heavily creative/imaginative and will require input from your DM. When the door is opened, all living entities within 20ft of the door on the Reality side must make a Dexterity saving throw equal to your spell save DC or be sucked into the World of Ink on a fail. You may designate any number of creatures within range to be immune to this feature when the door is opened. The door cannot be closed unless the Silver Tongue is on the World of Ink Side or until there are no living creatures that are not native to the World of Ink left inside.

Inkheart[edit]

At 20th level, you become the embodied link between reality and the World of Ink. Your heart becomes reinforced by World Script, giving you advantage on all Constitution checks and saves. The blood pumping through your veins becomes ink. Whenever you receive Piercing or Slashing damage from a living creature within 5ft of you, that creature must make a Constitution save equal to your spell save DC, taking 10d6 Acid damage and 10d6 Psychic damage on a fail, half as much on a success, as your inky blood damages the World Script that they consist of.

Realistic Reader[edit]

The Realistic Reader focuses on bringing an air of realism to their characters and creatures. To a Silver Tongue, this is quite literal, as a Realistic Reader is able to read the beings from their stories into reality.

Evocative Reader[edit]

The Evocative Reader focuses on texts that evoke their will upon the world. For those who are looking to have more direct impact in situations, the Evocative Reader can read non-living material and effects into reality like second nature.

Evoke: Possibility[edit]

At 3rd level, whenever you read a spell that deals damage to a creature, you may change that damage type to any other damage type other than Piercing, Slashing, or Bludgeoning.

Evoke: Pain[edit]

Starting at 7th level, you can read the description of a creature aloud and purposefully stutter. To stutter when reading something into existence is akin to causing damage to the very credibility of their natural concept, doing so rips the listener from the story as they snap back to reality. By causing this on purpose you can cause the creature being described to have a cognitive malfunction trying to reassert perspective. The creature must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC, taking 2d12 + proficiency bonus in Psychic damage or half as much on a save. This damage is increased to 3d12 at 11th level and 4d12 at 17th level. When a creature succeeds on this save, they are immune to this feature until your next long rest.

Evoke: Control[edit]

Starting at 14th level, whenever you read a spell, you may choose from amongst its Casting Time, Range, or Duration. You may change the spell attribute to a value of your choice. If you choose the Duration spell attribute, you must provide a set time the spell will last no longer than one day or you may choose to have the spell last indefinitely but require concentration. At 17th level, this feature will allow, with DM approval, for spells to have the "Until Dismissed" duration.

Revisionist Reader[edit]

The Revisionist Reader subclass focuses on changing text to buff and de-buff. A support playstyle, the Revisionist Reader is keen to find the spots in text that need just a bit of revision to come out the way they want.

External Revision[edit]

Beginning at 3rd level, you may write short revisions and read them to apply their benefits. A list of effects capable with this feature will be detailed at the end of the feature description. This can be done in two ways. Each object or creature can only be affected by one External Revision at a time. You may only have a number of External Revisions active at a time equal to your number of Emendations known.

The first method provides longer benefits, writing temporary text directly on the object or creature being modified. This method can only be done on an object you can touch or a willing creature you can touch and takes 1 minute to transcribe.

The second method requires writing a revision on parchment with adhesive on one side. As an action, you can attach an adhesive parchment to a willing creature or object within 5ft of you. For unwilling creatures or objects being worn/carried by an unwilling creature, make a melee spell attack against the target and successfully attach the parchment on a successful hit. You may read the parchment as a Bonus Action to activate its effect.

External Revisions that are written directly on the object or creature last until your next long rest. External Revisions applied by adhesive parchment last for 1 minute.

Creature Effects:

- Increase the creatures AC by 1

- Decrease the creatures AC by 1

- The creature gains advantage to ability or skill checks of your choice

- The creature gains disadvantage to ability or skill checks of your choice

- DM discretion option. If you have an idea not listed, speak to your DM on if they will allow it.

Object Effects:

- The object deals +1 damage when used for an attack

- The object deals -1 damage when used for an attack

- The objects weight is reduced by half

- The objects weight is doubled

- DM discretion option. If you have an idea not listed, speak to your DM on if they will allow it.

Hasty Revision[edit]

Starting at 7th level, as a reaction, you may force a creature to reroll any roll and use the new outcome. You may do so after learning what the roll is. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Emendations known per long rest.

Persistent Revision[edit]

Starting at 14th level, choose one enchantment spell with the Buff spell tag and one enchantment spell with the Debuff spell tag. The spells must have a duration other than instant and they must be 5th level or lower. Once per long rest, you can cast one of the spells except the spells duration will change to "Until dismissed". You may only have one spell active from this feature at a time. To cast an additional spell using this feature, you must first dismiss any other spells cast using this feature.

Literary Emendations[edit]

If a literary emendation has prerequisites, you must meet them to utilize it. You can utilize the emendation at the same time you meet its prerequisites. A level prerequisite refers to your Silver Tongue class level.
