An older silurian

Description[edit]

Silurian are a race of amphibious reptilians with a flair for the dramatic. They average 5 feet 9 inches in height and their long, sinuous tails add an extra 6 feet of length. Silurian skin coloration tend to be as bright and bold as their personalities, though vibrant green, sunset red, and aquatic blue tend to be quite common. Silurian lack ears, but instead have a large fin on the back of their head which seems to serve the same purpose. They also tend to favor stylish clothing, with a distinct preference for what modern day sensibilities would call "swashbuckling" or "piratey" outfits.

The silurian are not known for being the wisest of individuals. They prefer to live in the moment, cherishing all life has to offer and exploring all that is explorable. Common life choices include adventuring, piracy, smuggling, and trading during the earlier phases of their life, but by the time they reach their golden years they tend to settle down and focus on chronicling their rich, full lives for the prosperity of future generations.

Alignment[edit]

Silurian have a reputation for being a wild and flamboyant people, and naturally gravitate to the chaotic alignments. They are free to be any alignment they choose, however.

Lands[edit]

Today, silurians favor large human cities or other metropolitan locations, but in days gone by they were known for their large river barges and small settlements in the many swamps and bogs of their homeworld.

Religion[edit]

Silurians are an open-minded people, but few put much stock into the various religions of the world.

Names[edit]

Silurian names tend to be as extravagant as their appearance, with full, proper names that typically resemble a haiku or other short poem reflecting the sensations present at their birth. The second line tends to be their common name, with that shortened even more in everyday usage.

Example: "Gentle Summer Mist/Golden Morning Radiance/Basking In The Sun" might be one silurian's proper name, with "Golden Morning Radiance" as his common name amongst own family, and "Rade" as his everyday name when dealing with others.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • -2 Wisdom, +2 Charisma
  • Medium Humanoid (Aquatic Reptilian): As Medium creatures, silurians have no special bonuses or penalties due to their size. They do possess the reptilian and aquatic subtypes, however.
  • Silurian base land speed is 30 feet. They can also use their powerful tails to great effect while swimming, granting a swim speed of 40 feet.
  • Cool-Blooded (Ex): Silurian are similar to cold-blooded creatures, but have special organs that they can use to store extra heat for later usage. This allows a silurian to function normally in cold environments for extended periods of time (or indefinitely if they have access to a strong source of heat, such as a hearth or bonfire, for at least two hours a day). Additionally, Silurians can expend a portion of this stored heat to give themselves a temporary boost equivalent to a haste spell for 5 rounds, but they become slowed afterwards for an equivalent period of time unless they are in an extremely warm environment. Even then they must bask in the sun or other source of strong heat for a minimum of two hours before they can use this ability again. If for some reason they expend all of their stored heat, they are treated as being permanently slowed until this can be remedied.
  • Enduring Breath (Ex): Silurian can hold their breath for five times longer than usual. Additionally, they do not need to make Swim checks or Survival checks to hold their breath in strenuous situations.
  • Swamp Walking (Ex): Silurian ignore difficult terrain caused by bog, mud, or shallow water.
  • Tail Swipe (Ex): Silurian may use their tail to make an extra attack during a full round attack action. All attacks suffer a -2 penalty during that action. The tail swipe does 1d4 points of damage, has a critical range of 18-20/x2, and is a blundgeoning weapon.
  • Weapon Proficiency: Silurian receive Martial Weapons Proficiency (Rapier) and Improved Unarmed Strike (Tail Swipe) as bonus feats.
  • +2 racial bonus on Bluff and Sense Motive skill checks.
  • Automatic Languages: Common, Silurian. Bonus Languages: Any. Silurian are very interested in communication and expression.
  • Favored Class: Bard or Sorcerer. When determining whether a multiclass silurian takes an experience point penalty, his or her highest-level class as a bard or sorcerer does not count.

Racial Feats[edit]
