This submarine is propelled through water by one S5W2 nuclear reactor, two steam turbines, one shaft with 15,000 shaft horsepower, and a propeller. The submarine comes equipped with four 533 mm torpedo tubes for Mk-48 and ADCAP torpedoes mounted amidship, harpoon missile, Tomahawk (TLAM) cruise missile, and SUBROC missile capabilities, and the ability to lay mines. Compared to other submarines they have sacrificed speed for greater combat capabilities. Sturgeon SSN (Ship Submersible Nuclear) are ambush-type anti-submarine warfare vessels. Their spherical SONAR includes the SIGINT sensor suite, mounted on the bow, and LOFAR (Low Frequency Analysis and Ranging) signal processing tool which focuses only on those low frequency tones in which the submarine's source levels are highest. The SONAR can therefore detect that narrow component of the submarine's overall sound spectrum at much greater ranges before noise drowns it out. Their sailmounted dive planes can rotate to a vertical position and enable them to surface in regions with obstructions, such as Arctic regions. Sturgeon SSN vessels make covertly tracking an opponent and ambush operations possible. Its size makes it quiet, and its SONAR array gives one a wider-angle view in both azimuth and elevation of its target, eliminating a set of blinders, which constrain the field of regard to a narrow cone looking forward.
