This submarine is propelled through water by a CAS 48 pressurized water-cooled nuclear reactor rated at 48 MW, two turbo alternators, one Jeumont-Schneider auxiliary diesel electric motor, and a propeller or propeller pump. In case of an propulsion failure a SEMT Pielstick 480 kW diesel generator with an auxiliary engine of 500 kW can be used to generate emergency propulsion. The 48 MW reactor needs no refuelling for 30 years. The submarine comes equipped with Aerospatiale SM 39 Exocet anti-ship missiles launched from four 533 mm torpedo tubes, ECAN L5 Mod 3 dual purpose torpedoes or up to 32 FG 29 mines carried in lieu of torpedoes. It has the capacity to carry 14 missiles and torpedoes in a mixed load. The four 533mm torpedo tubes are equipped with a pneumatic ram system for discharging torpedoes from the tubes. Rubis SSN (Ship Submersible Nuclear) are compact nuclear submarines. They have a computer central system for submarine detection, processing of information and firing of weapons. The target range and bearing data for the torpedo's are downloaded from the submarine's tactical data system and weapon control system into the torpedo's computer. The hull depth has three decks in the forward and immediately aft of the fin.
