The shatjans are humanoid reindeers that stands about 8 feet tall, with a stocky, muscular build. Its body is covered in thick, gray to dark brown fur, especially around its head, neck, shoulders, and forearms. Males sport impressive antlers, while females have smaller, but still prominent antlers. Their clothing is made from animal skins and bark, often decorated with intricate patterns and symbols. Shatjans are solitary creatures, deeply connected to the reindeer herds they protect. They are not naturally aggressive but will fiercely defend their herds from predators and threats. They are accustomed to the harsh conditions of the icy tundra and possess an innate ability to manipulate the cold around them. Shatjans prefer to avoid combat, using their surroundings to their advantage and only engaging when absolutely necessary. During the summer, shatjans live in small family groups near the edge of forests and tundra in the Hordelands, building temporary shelters. In winter, they follow the reindeer into the forests, living in ice caves or leather tents. They are self-sufficient, primarily eating the same foods as reindeer but occasionally trading with nearby human tribes for vegetable delicacies. The shatjans are revered by local human tribes like the Tuigan as powerful totem spirits. They feature prominently in local folklore, and tribesmen treat encounters with them as good omens, often making offerings before hunts to gain their favor. Shatjans have a neutral view of humans, treating them as another force in their environment to contend with, and they can communicate in the languages of nearby human tribes. However, the Tuigan are sometimes able to recruit the Shatjans in their army as a tough unit of monstrous infantry. |
