Shadow Mage of the Gray Consortium[edit]

Throughout time, mages have had the ability to tap into the Plane of Shadow to duplicate spell effects. Some use this to form creatures, much as a conjurer summons beasts to do his bidding. Others produce spectacular results, similar to those of an evoker. Most, however, don’t fully appreciate the power at their fingertips. Fewer still realize they wield the key to freeing {redacted}.

The Gray Consortium seeks spellcasters for their ranks, only tapping those who already possess significant power. {redacted} and the others teach these worthy recruits how to utilize the Plane of Shadows to strengthen their already powerful magic. The essence from the plane fuels their spells, allowing them to manipulate the substance to a far greater degree than other spellcasters.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Shadow Mage of the Gray Consortium.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Shadow mages of the Gray Consortium gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor.

Spellcasting: When a new shadow mage of the Gray Consortium level is gained, except at 1st level, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a shadow mage of the Gray Consortium, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Improved Shadow Casting (Su): A shadow mage of the Gray Consortium first learns the nuances of tapping into the Plane of Shadow to mimic other spell effects. Whenever the shadow mage of the Gray Consortium casts shadow conjuration, shadow evocation, greater shadow conjuration, greater shadow evocation, or shades all effects are increased by 10%. At 4th level, this increases to 20% and at 7th level the effect is increased by 30%. The effect can never be raised above 100%.

Control Light and Shadows (Su): A shadow mage of the Gray Consortium learns early in his career that light and dark are just further aspects of shadow. At 2nd level, the shadow mage of the Gray Consortium learns to manipulate his spells that have the [darkness] or [light] descriptors. When casting spells with the [darkness] or [light] descriptor, he may opt to produce an effect one step brighter or darker. He may alter the amount of darkness or light produced at the casting time, and as a move equivalent action once each round the spell is in effect.

In addition, where appropriate, a shadow mage of the Gray Consortium treats spells with either the [light] or [darkness] descriptor as though they had the shadow subtype. For example, a 3rd level shadow mage of the Gray Consortium may apply shadow metamagic I to the light spell to extend the duration at no increased spell level (assuming he had the Extend Spell feat).

Shadow Focus (Ex): At 2nd level, whenever a shadow mage of the Gray Consortium casts a shadow spell, he adds +1 to the save DC. This bonus stacks with those from his Spell Focus and Greater Spell Focus feats.

Shadow Travel (Sp): As he continues his studies into the substance of shadow, a shadow mage of the Gray Consortium’s connection with the Plane of Shadow intensifies, to the extent that he may use the plane to make short trips. A number of times per day equal to his class level, a shadow mage of 3rd level or higher may use the Plane of Shadows as though casting dimension door. His caster level for this ability is equal to his normal caster level.

Additionally, once per day he may tap into the Plane of Shadow to produce effects similar to a teleport spell. All the benefits and risks associated with the spell apply to this form of dimensional travel—including the number of companions he may take along, chances of failure, and so on. His caster level for this ability is his normal caster level.

Shadow Metamagic (Su): At 3rd level, a shadow mage of the Gray Consortium’s connection with the Plane of Shadow allows him to cast shadow spells affected by metamagic feats with less effort than other spell casters. The level increase of all such spells is reduced by one. This cannot reduce the adjustment below +0. For example, casting an extended light spell does not have any level increase, because Extend Spell normally has a +1 level increase. Casting an Energy Substitution spell affected by this ability does not have any effect, since the cost of that feat is already +0.

At 6th level, he reduces the cost of all such metamagic feats by two levels, though again the level adjustment cannot go below a +0.

Shadow Defenses (Su): A shadow mage of the Gray Consortium spends enough time interacting with shadows that he finds ways to use them to his benefit passively. At 5th level, shadow substance continuously swirls around the character, granting him concealment (and therefore making him immune to sneak attack and other precision-based damage). The shadow mage of the Gray Consortium has the ability to control these swirling shadows, and may dismiss them as a free action; reactivating this ability is a move action.
