Scroll user - Max UMD like a boss (3.5e Optimized Character Build)
From D&D Wiki
Introduction[edit]
Scrolls are, maybe, the best magic object. 9th level spells, low cost... The only problem is the DC to activate them (20 + min. caster level). That is, Use magic device CD 37 for a 9th level spell. What would you think if i say that you could use a wish scroll at level 6?
Before anything, i got to say that english is not my native language, so if i make some mistake (probably i will make a lot) let me know.
References[edit]
Clases: Warlock (Complete arcane) Artificer (Eberron campaign setting) Marshall (Miniature handbook) Races of Faerun (Lesser aasimar)
Items[edit]
None, unless marshall and/or artificer are restricted.
Progression[edit]
Race: Lesser aasimar. If not allowed, human.
Lesser aasimar gives +2 CHA (the important) and some other things (not important). You should have 20 in CHA (18 if human).
I'll keep it simple here. Just take one level of artificer, four levels of warlock, and one level of marshall. Make sure to take Skill focus (Use magic device) and magic aptitude, and put 5 ranks on spellcraft and decipher script.
Other Components[edit]
<- anything not covered by the previous sections ->
Highlights[edit]
1 level of artificer gives you a +2 on UMD to activate a scroll, synergy with spellcraft and decipher script give +4, and the feats Skill focus (UMD) and Magic aptitude, give +5. 4th level warlocks can take 10 on UMD checks, even if they are threaten. So: If you take 10, +5 CHA, +8 ranks (lvl5 character) +5 feats +2 artificer +4 synergy = 34 (32 if human) Take 1 level of marshall and choose Motivate charisma as your aura. With this, your UMD checks will be 39 (if lesser aasimar), 36 if human.
Human, just buy an item that grants you a +1 to UMD. Not really expensive at that level.
Sure, you could just take 13 levels in artificer (allows you to take 10, 16 ranks, feats and synergy and a +2 item crafted by yourself) but that's a long way if you are starting a camapign at level 1.
Munchkin-Size Me[edit]
Not really much to add, you can use absolutely any magic object you find. Keep taking levels in artificer to make your own scrolls/wands/whatever and save money.
Side Notes[edit]
You are not going to find many things at this level, really. But when you find them, you'll be ready.
Limitations[edit]
Bad luck finding scrolls, and lack of gold to buy them are things that get in your way.
DM Counters[edit]
Don't give this guy anything magic.
