The sasumata has reach. You can strike opponents 10' away with it, but you can't use it against an adjacent foe.
A wielder who hits a creature of the same size or one step smaller with a samusata can immediately initiate a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opporunity. In addition to the normal options available to a grappler, the wielder of the sasumata can attempt to pull his target to the ground (the equivalent of a trip attack, though no attack roll is necessary).
The sasumata is a dull crescent-moon blade placed atop a long pole designed to capture opponents with a minimum of harm.
