Qualith[edit]

=Sneaky Cephalopods[edit]

Qualith are amphibious half octopus creatures with bluish purple skin tones, humanoid torsos, and either solid black eyes or blue eyes with sideways slit pupils. They have luminous blue markings on their skin, wich may glow when magic is used nearby. These lines often make swirling whirlpool patterns around the eye and other stripes that augment physical features, and tentacles for hair. They have webbed hands with glowing fingertips, loaded with stinging cells. They wear watertight clothing with large collars and wide belts (to minimize water resistance) that can be used as easily on land as in the water, and accommodate several hidden pouches. This gear is complemented by gold lining and jewelry of often suspicious origins. On formal occasions, Qualith wear tight black caps with gold scallops on the brim that only barely half cover their gill like ears. Earrings are not uncommon.

From murderers to merchants[edit]

Although Qualith are an influential merchant race now, their beginnings were far more humble. They began as a normal race, perhaps humans. Then this tribe of once-Humans came upon a huge sea beast lying stranded on the shore. It is unknown weather it was a kraken, aboleth, or something stranger, but their mages returned it to the water. In exchange for this, the creature granted them a share of its power, transforming them into what they are now. At first they were horrified and went into hiding. They spent untold years like this, living in fear and weakness, until a visionary Qualith named Shuiiquil decided, after years of researching his race, that a network of sheeming, amphibious, poisonous, octo-spies were just what the world needed. He gathered the few of his race who shared his vision and soon rented their services as spies and assassins. this got the Qualith a taste of wealth, and more importantly, power. They wanted more. The Qualith had now established an underwater empire.

Treachery and telepathy[edit]

As a wise man (who is now dead, by the way) once said, "It's easy to tell trustworthy Qualith from devious ones. The trustworthy ones are all dead!" Qualith society is a thing of beautiful finesse and deady aristocrats, where the cautious watch their enemies and the wise watch their friends. Cephalids are natural liars, so their society is watched by a psionic network called the trust that continually read the minds of all Qualith citizens. Unfortunately, the trust is the most corrupt part of Qualith society. Their job is to make certain that laws are enforced and obeyed, and kill by any means possible those who disobey them. Sadly, they use this power to get their revenge on enemies. Because of these tendencies, Qualith are accustomed to either getting their way or being at the mercy of others. Their society has one more important pillar: Jinora. This city in the political equivalent of half their world to Qualith, because it is their only tie to the surface. Its location is hard to map because the city is, unexpectedly, in the sky. Jinora is home to the largest fish market, the largest lumenquarts power matrix, and the most deadly place to go if have a large number of shady enemies. the fish are kept live because #1, they taste fresher, and #2, they are convenient for disposing of bodies. The Qualith are mostly non religious. However some follow a philosophy that states that they can attain godhood by gaining the "perfect knowledge", meaning knowlige of self, truith, and... Knowledge?
