Polypus Sapiens (5e Race)

Stub Logo.png This page is incomplete and/or lacking flavor. Reason: Incomplete H&W table. Missing various traits (size, speed, etc.). "DC modifier +5" doesn't make sense. Is it an attack roll with +5, or is an DC check? It's unclear if the translucent subrace's slashing damage conversion only applies to unarmed attacks?

Scales.png This page is of questionable balance. Reason: This race gives unconditional resistance to standard damage types (piercing, slashing, bludgeoning). Pure damage (if this is an alterative rule if needs to be linked). Natural dart weapon scales hard. Flat bonus to all checks. See 5e Race Design Guide.

Polypus Sapiens[edit]

Design Note: This race is intended to be a replacement for dragonborn for underwater campaigns.

Physical Description[edit]

Polypus Sapiens is a medium sized, eight-limbed invertebrate, native to the seas of Ericulo. It is visually very similar to human interpretations of an anthropomorphised octopus, although they differentiate themselves from the O. Vulgaris species by referring to themselves as Octopode (Singular) or Octopi (Plural). They vary in color, but are usually somewhere between blue, red, yellow or green. They are sentient. They are genderless and reproduce asexually (they clone themselves).

On Breathing:

The problem with this race is that you might like to create one for a different campaign, set on land, so I thought I would make some recommendations on that. So here are a few “ground” (hehehe) rules.

  1. Gains extra exhaustion
  2. lower move speed
  3. advantage on grappling
  4. dies fast in deserts
  5. needs extra water

History[edit]

Originally migrating into the Vitra trench thousands of years ago, they hunted the native squid and pyjama sharks for food, and gathered plant life from the corals and reefs, before settling down and creating an advanced underwater city called Vitra City, which became a bustling economic metropolis. There is a common saying in the area “you can buy it for half the price and twice the quality at Vitra”. There is no lower or middle class in Vitra, as almost 90% of its population owns a buisness.

Society[edit]

They value hard work and honesty above all else, and for them it has worked. The only laws they have are to rein in the behaviour of visitors, especially elves, who they find very patronising.

Polypus Sapiens Names[edit]

Octopi are often named after their professions, hobbies, achievements or aspirations, and take great importance in their impact on others.
