Not much is known about the Phantom-kind. Some believe that the Phantom-kind are lost souls who took a physical form to live again among the living. Some say they are demons looking for a host body. However they came to exist, they are here now living as normal a life as they can.

Society[edit]

Only about 20 Phantom-kind are born every 100 or so years. In the first year of life, they wander around the world and learn about life by themselves as a shapeless entity. Then they choose their sex and physical form based on what they learned about life. Phantom-kind do not have genders but tend to adopt personalities coinciding with the sex they chose to take the form of.

Phantom-kind Names[edit]

Phantom-kind names are non-gendered and often tribal-like referring to darkness and/or spectral beings.

Examples: Pitch Umbra-Moss, Nightshade Shadow-Light, Eclipse Moon-Shade

Phantom-kind Traits[edit]

Residing in most places around Faerûn, Phantom-kind take the form of any race they choose. The difference is they do not have a physical body, are translucent, and glow ever so slightly.
Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 2 and your Wisdom score increases by 1 or vice versa based on your background.
Age. Technically, Phantom-kind are born into maturity, but it is thought that Phantom-kind mature when they take a form which is after 1 year. They can live up to 400 years old.
Alignment. Phantom-kind are all different. Their moral compass is shaped based on what they experienced in the first year or so of their life.
Size. Phantom-kind weigh nothing and their height is dependent on what race they choose to look like. Your size is either Medium or Small.
Speed. Your base walking speed is either 30 (medium) or 25 (small).
Darkvision. Because you spent the first year of your life traveling in many potentially dark areas, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 70 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Spectral Body. Phantom-kind bodies cannot interact with organic and living material. They can, however, interact with non-living or in-organic material. What this means is your body will pass through things such as trees and the bodies of living things but will not pass through walls or ground. This allows you to wear non-cloth clothes and metal armor, but it also means that while you are immune to an unarmed strike from someone not wearing gauntlets or gloves, you take normal damage from all weapons (unless it’s made of wood). If the enemy is magical (i.e., a dragon), the attacking body part will pass through you, but you will still take the damage.
Ghostly Glow. Because your body glows, you emit a low light that allows anyone around you to see 10ft more than usual in dark areas and 5ft more in dimly lit areas.
Ghostly Form. Because your form resembles that of a ghost, you can cast fear as if it were a 3rd level spell once without using a spell slot. Until 7th level, you can restore this use after a long rest. At 7th level, you can use this trait at will without having to restore the use by resting. Your spellcasting modifier is Intelligence or Wisdom, your choice but you cannot switch after you choose.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and two other languages of your choice. Phantom-kind tend to learn the languages of their favorite cultures.
