Patch-Flesh[edit]

I never wanted more than something like that heart-thing people talked about. I have something in my chest like they do ... Is that a heart?
—Doll-face, a patch-flesh woman

Physical Description[edit]

The patch-flesh, also known sometimes as fleshforged, are living constructs like warforged. Their bodies, however, are entirely made of organic material, usually that of flesh. These materials are usually taken from other beings and are seemingly stitched together. Patch-flesh get their name from the fact that their flesh seems quite literally like patchwork, with staples and seams sewn together. Some of their body parts are colored differently as a result. Some patch-flesh have poorly preserved body parts and so may have discolored or rotting parts in comparison to better preserved specimens that retain a living skin tone color and texture. While they are best likened to flesh golems, the patch-flesh have living juices in their body, as well as a semblance of a core that is similar in function to the ghulra for warforged.

History[edit]

Patch-flesh originally came about as a concept of using the idea of flesh golems to bring back the dead without means of resurrection magic. This used a variety of alchemical and scientific formulae to preserve flesh and connect body parts together before a proper result was achieved. The first few patch-flesh were often made of bodies from grieving patrons who had dearly departed ones they wished to bring back. The first attempts resulted in flaws, ranging from memory loss and utterly intelligible humanoids. The technique was refined somewhat but the projects were delayed and eventually discontinued on the grounds of desecration and meager results to show for it. Some practitioners remained, scattered across the realms, continuing the art of making these golem-like beings. Nowadays, patch-flesh are rare sights, often having been commissioned into creation by rich entities, some of them patch-flesh themselves. Some patch-flesh are fleshforgers themselves, having learned the art from their creators.

Society[edit]

Being created this way though the process has prevented a large amount of patch-flesh from occurring. Even when made with steady streams, the amount of maintenance needed sometimes made patch-flesh sort of a luxury item, even among patch-flesh practitioners. Most patch-flesh live among humans, though they are usually delegated the status of secondary figures or tethers rather than free independents. In that way, many are treated either as pets or property. There are stories of patch-flesh communes that exist far away, where the original practitioners of the animation process sequestered themselves after exile or hermitage. Even in stories, these are communities of less than thirty members usually, and they are very quiet in existence. Many patch-flesh learn to cover their imperfections with makeup to appear as though they are normal people. This results in many patch-flesh feeling ostracized or ashamed for existing in other societies.

Patch-Flesh Names[edit]

The status of patch-flesh as objects imprints on their names. While there are patch-flesh with typical names, as well as patch-flesh who choose their own names, many remain named with the following formula of two words. The words are meant to be descriptors for the patch-flesh's properties so their owners and makers have an easy time telling them apart. It is sort of like a signature, as it is said that no two patch-flesh will share the exact same properties.

Male: Man-doll, Hard-fist, Steel-buns, Cloth-man

Female: Doll-face, Posh-girl, Curl-locks, Thin-lips
