Pantheran[edit]

The red-eyed ones of the jungle are its children. They will kill us if we approach their territory.

Physical Description[edit]

Pantherans are tall humanoid black panthers. They have jet black fur all over their bodies, save for their underside, which is usually grey. What makes them special is their eyes, which are not the usual gold, but red. This gives them a demonic and angry sort of appearance, which is appropriate, as their very biology is that of a mad, efficient killer. Pantheran bodies are highly muscled, though reasonably toned so they aren't hulking masses. Their lithe bodies allow for ease of movement, as well as bursts of strength when the situation dictates. Like tabaxi, pantheran are equipped with sharp claws and teeth perfect for a carnivore.

History[edit]

The pantherans were evolved from the great cats favored by the god of war, Tempus. Panthers are the favored animal of Tempus, and he would keep a select few to bequeath onto his favored champions. According to pantheran legend, some panthers were so ferocious and bloodthirsty that Tempus honored their fighting will by granting them a human shape to partake in the activities of civilization and its many wars. These were the first pantherans. They came to the world as harbingers of war in Tempus' raging image. While their numbers are few, they have remained a presence in certain parts of the world where peace is tenuous at best.

Society[edit]

Typically, pantherans are actually nomadic. Their homeland is unknown, since they were transformed from the act of a god after having been removed from their original home. They travel in war-bands when they are plentiful, and in mercenary groups when they are less than ten members. They seek conflict to fight in and travel to war-torn parts of the world to participate in bloodshed. For as long as there is battle, the pantheran camp out in that area. This belligerent upbringing is said to be drilled into their females and young so that they carry the famous pantheran fighting spirit of war. Others theorize, however, that they have the spirit of battle itself from Tempus.

Their groups usually raise their children on the go, training them in tactics and fighting style from early ages. Males are expected to be protectors while females are given the role of rearing the young. However, there are some pantheran war bands led by female warrior protectors as well.

Pantheran Names[edit]

Names for the pantherans are tied to that of war. Favorable names imply strength and courage, while runts are given derogatory names to indicate their futures as shield-bearers and servants of true vanguard warriors. Titles in war feats are very important, as they are markers of one's strength and achievements. Naming conventions between genders differ very slightly, with only a feminine ending vowel to differentiate for females. Warbands sometimes also have tribe names that attach to the main name.
