Pangilofolk (5e Race)

Scales.png This page is of questionable balance. Reason: While not super overly powered, the race has a high AC base trait, higher than 13 base, which is about the highest in official content. At this point, it should be given tortle's AC, which does not take dexterity into account. It also gets superior darkvision and burrowing speed to be used at will, so you can gain cover almost automatically in the right terrain. This combined with the other traits make the race feel a bit over first party content in some ways.

Pangilofolk[edit]

We are the guardians of the deep earth and the ancient trees. Our scales shield us, our claws protect us, and our hearts beat in rhythm with the land we defend.

Physical Description[edit]

Pangilofolk are humanoid creatures with features reminiscent of pangolins. They possess tough, overlapping scales covering their bodies, which provide natural protection. Their hands and feet end in strong claws suitable for digging and climbing. Pangilofolk have a long, flexible tail, which aids in balance and can be used in combat. Their heads are elongated, with small, sharp eyes and a narrow snout.

History[edit]

Pangilofolk trace their origins to ancient times when the world was young and untamed. Legend has it that they were created by deities of earth and protection, tasked with guarding the natural world from those who would exploit it. They emerged from the depths of the earth, burrowing through rich soils and ancient roots to establish their first settlements. Their connection to the land runs deep, as they learned to live harmoniously with the forests and mountains that surrounded them.

Over the millennia, Pangilofolk honed their skills in crafting and burrowing, creating intricate underground cities that melded seamlessly with the natural environment. They mastered the arts of camouflage and defense, using their scales and claws not just for protection but also as tools for survival. Their society flourished in the hidden corners of the world, far from the prying eyes of other races.

As civilizations grew and empires clashed on the surface, the Pangilofolk remained steadfast in their isolation. They maintained a wary neutrality, preferring to observe rather than intervene in the conflicts of others. Despite this, they cultivated trade and alliances with those who respected their boundaries and shared their reverence for nature.

Society[edit]

Pangilofolk society revolves around their deep connection to the earth and their communal way of life. They live in tightly-knit communities nestled within dense forests or hidden beneath the earth in elaborate burrow complexes. Each community is led by elders who possess wisdom gained through centuries of living in harmony with nature.

Community defense and secrecy are paramount to Pangilofolk society. They are adept at constructing hidden entrances and defensive traps around their settlements, relying on their natural armor and burrowing abilities to protect their homes. Despite their defensive mindset, Pangilofolk are hospitable to those they trust, offering warm shelters and provisions to travelers who respect their customs and lands.

Their culture emphasizes mutual cooperation and respect for the natural world. Pangilofolk often gather for communal rituals and celebrations that honor the changing seasons and their deities of earth and protection. Artisans among them craft intricate jewelry and tools from materials found in their surroundings, showcasing their craftsmanship and reverence for their environment.

Pangilofolk value personal independence and the ability to contribute to their community. They prize skills such as hunting, tracking, and herbalism, which are crucial for survival in their natural habitats. While they generally prefer to remain hidden from the affairs of other races, some Pangilofolk are driven by curiosity or a sense of duty to explore the world beyond their borders.
