Pactblade, Variant[edit]
Rogue Subclass
Roguish Archetype: Some rogues specialize in assassination and some in espionage, you on the other hand devoted your life to understanding eldritch magic. Your devotion sparked an interest in an otherworldly patron with whom you forged a pact.
- Pact Magic
By the time you choose this roguish archetype at 3rd level, your eldritch research and the magic bestowed on you by your patron have given you ability to cast spells.
- Cantrips
- You learn three cantrips: Mage Hand and two other cantrips of your choice from the warlock spell list. You learn another warlock cantrip of your choice at 10th level.
- Spell Slots
- You have a number of spell slots equal to those shown on the Warlock Class Table, and your maximum spell slot level is equal to half the maximum spell slot level shown (Rounded up). To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a short or long rest.
- For example, if you know the 1st-level spell thunderwave, and have a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast thunderwave at 2nd level.
- Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher
- At 3rd level, you know a number of spells equal to half your proficiency bonus (Rounded up) + your spellcasting ability modifier (Unless it is negative).
- Additionally, when you gain a level in this class, you can choose one of the warlock spells you know and replace it with another spell from the warlock spell list, which also must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
- Spellcasting Ability
- Choose Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma as your spellcasting ability for your pactblade spells (dependent on your connection to your patron e.g. magic gained from study is intelligence and magic gained from understanding is wisdom). From now on the ability you chose is your spellcasting ability for the purpose of casting of spells. In addition, you use the same ability modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a pactblade spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence or Wisdom or Charisma modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence or Wisdom or Charisma modifier
- Spellcasting Focus
- You can use an arcane focus as a spellcasting focus for your pactblade spells.
- Pactblade
When you choose this roguish archetype at 3rd level, you gain the ability to create a pact weapon in your empty hand as an action. You can choose the form that this melee weapon takes each time you create it and you are proficient with it while you wield it. This weapon counts as magical for the purpose of overcoming resistance and immunity to nonmagical attacks and damage.
Your pact weapon disappears if it is more than 5 feet away from you for 1 minute or more. It also disappears if you use this feature again, if you dismiss the weapon (no action required), or if you die.
You can transform one magic weapon into your pact weapon by performing a special ritual while you hold the weapon. You perform the ritual over the course of 1 hour, which can be done during a short rest. You can then dismiss the weapon, shunting it into an extradimensional space, and it appears whenever you create your pact weapon thereafter. You can't affect an artifact or a sentient weapon in this way. The weapon ceases being your pact weapon if you die, if you perform the 1-hour ritual on a different weapon, or if you use a 1-hour ritual to break your bond to it. The weapon appears at your feet if it is in the extradimensional space when the bond breaks.
The influence of your patron also allows you to mystically channel your will through a particular weapon. Whenever you finish a long rest, you can touch one weapon that you are proficient with and that lacks the two-handed property. When you attack with that weapon, you can use your spellcasting ability modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity, for the attack and damage rolls. This benefit lasts until you finish a long rest. If you later gain the Pact of the Blade feature, this benefit extends to every pact weapon you conjure with that feature, no matter the weapon's type.
- Eldritch Invocation
When you choose this roguish archetype at 3rd level, you gain two eldritch invocations from the list available to the warlock. For invocations that have a certain warlock level as a prerequisite, you can use your rogue levels for the purposes of meeting the invocation's prerequisite, and may use your spellcasting ability modifier in place of your Charisma modifier.
You gain an additional invocation when you reach 9th level, and again at 17th level. Additionally, when you gain a level in the rogue class, you can choose one of the invocations you know and replace it with another invocation you could learn at that level.
- War Magic
Beginning at 9th level, when you use your action to cast a cantrip, you can make one weapon attack as a bonus action.
- Spellsneak
Beginning at 9th level, you can apply Sneak Attack with spell attacks and attacks against creatures that are under the effect of your spells as long as you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll.
- Lifedrinker
Starting from 17th level, when you hit a creature with a Sneak Attack, you can deal necrotic damage instead of your normal weapon damage. Additionally, when you reduce a creature to 0 hit points, you gain hit points equal to your rogue level + spellcasting modifier.
