Mystic (5e Subrace)
Mystic[edit]
Deep within your essence lies the spark of a mysterious and potent force, an echo of psionic power that transcends the natural order. Perhaps one of your parents was a master of the mystic arts, weaving thoughts into reality. Maybe your creator, if forged rather than born, infused you with forbidden knowledge of the mind to grant you untold potential.
Whatever your origin, this legacy awakens within you the ability to bend your own life force into a wellspring of unimaginable psychic might. You are a being of duality—flesh and spirit intertwined—who channels your vitality into shaping the world around you, empowering your thoughts to pierce the veils of existence.
Your journey is one of balance and sacrifice. Each surge of mental power draws from the core of your being, a trade-off that makes your gift both a blessing and a burden. Yet, this psionic resonance connects you to something far greater: the currents of pure thought that flow through all creation. You are the harbinger of an ancient and mystic potential that few dare to embrace.
Psychic Vulnerability[edit]
Your connection to the mystic forces of the mind comes at a price. The same conduit that allows you to channel your psionic potential leaves your psyche more exposed to external mental influences. Psychic energy resonates with the core of your being, amplifying its effects—whether they are harmful or benign.
This vulnerability is a result of your heightened sensitivity to mental currents, an unintended consequence of wielding such power. While others may brush off psychic assaults, your mind acts as an open vessel, amplifying the intensity of the damage. This drawback serves as a constant reminder of the delicate balance required to harness your extraordinary abilities.
Though this weakness makes you more susceptible to harm, it also reinforces your resilience in other ways. Facing such challenges hones your will, driving you to master the very forces that threaten to unravel your mind.
Subrace Adaptation[edit]
This subrace is versatile and can be added to any existing racial model that includes a subrace. Its unique features integrate seamlessly with the chosen model, granting new abilities and benefits while respecting the original racial traits.
When selecting this subrace:
Add the features of this subrace to the chosen racial model, combining them with the existing traits. If the chosen race has resistance to psychic damage, the vulnerability granted by this subrace negates that resistance, causing you to take normal psychic damage without advantages or disadvantages. This approach allows for additional customization while maintaining balance and coherence among existing races and subraces in the game.
Ability Score Increase. Your Constitution score increases by 1.
Psychic Vulnerability. You have vulnerability to psychic damage.
Psychic Vitality. Your training and ancestry give you the following benefits:
- Due to your mystical nature and the frequent self-inflicted injuries in pursuit of greater power, your body has adapted to become more robust and resilient. Each time you gain a level, your maximum hit points increase by an additional 2 points.
- You know a number of disciplines equal to twice your proficiency bonus and a number of talents equal to half your proficiency bonus rounded up. If any feature of a discipline or talent you use requires a creature to make a saving throw, the saving throw DC equals 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier. If they require you to make an attack roll, the attack modifier equals your proficiency bonus plus your Intelligence modifier.
- You can pay the psi point cost of a discipline by using your hit points. To do so, multiply the psi point cost of the discipline you wish to use by 1.5 and apply your psychic vulnerability to determine the total life force cost. The damage type dealt to you when using this ability is psychic, and it bypasses all temporary hit points.
- You can focus on one additional discipline. If you already have the ability to focus on a discipline, this feature allows you to maintain focus on one more simultaneously.
However, you cannot use any disciplines that include healing effects while benefiting from this feature.
