Mukha-vale[edit]

Peril from the skies comes from us above, from sea, from the blue yonder!

Physical Description[edit]

The mukha-vale are described as humanoids having four long arms and long-fingered hands, such that they reach past their hips. They are lanky creatures, able to move about a ships masts with relative ease and speed, similar to how a monkey scales trees. Their bodies are covered in a thin layer of hair. The truly defining feature, however, of any mukha-vale is the mask that is bound to their face. It is described to be something like metal, attached to their very flesh. Removing it means death. The design of these masks vary from individual, and some have designs like horns, fangs, and so forth.

History[edit]

Mukha-vale claim ancestry from a god named Alf-Wahid. The god gave them masks to designate them as his own people. These masks are therefore sacred to the mukha-vale. To remove a mask from a living mukha-vale is death, whether from the grievous wound or some divine punishment as is ordained by their accounts. It is said that after Alf-Wahid granted them their masks, they became able to speak and think higher thoughts. This implies that mukha-vale descended from bestial creatures before being granted sapience by the god of the mask.

Society[edit]

All mukha-vale have a desire to travel. They are known to live as nomads of the sea, in large groups that command ships from when they are young. These floating mukha-vale shanties, as their groups are called, raise their families aboard rigs that vary based on the size of the shanty. Shanties can grow as large as 30 members aboard a barge. From a young age, mukha-vales raise their children to be well-versed in the art of seafaring and travel. They are known to stop and hop along islands and coasts, sometimes staying on land for months, before heading back out to sea and moving on.

Worship for the mukha-vale is based on habit and daily life more so than special behaviors. Since Alf-Wahid granted them intelligence, the mukha-vale believe that the pursuit of mental prowess is proper worship and gratitude to the god. Thus, mukha-vale are often curious and eager to learn new things. The pursuit of knowledge befits them as worldly explorers very well and they are avid learners of new cultures and languages.

Mukha-vale Names[edit]

Names for the mukha-vale are very varied due to them taking snippets of many cultures that they have learned from. The original base for their name is a form of Common practiced by dwellers of deserts and jungles.
