Monstrous Versatility (5e Class Feature)
From D&D Wiki
Monstrous Versatility[edit]
Composite character feature (replaces ability score improvement)
Who said monsters couldn't benefit from class levels? This feature is designed for monstrous composite characters who might not otherwise have all the anatomy required to benefit from every single class feature gained from multiclassing. Instead, a monstrous character can trade in the ability score improvement they get for one or two class features.
When you are granted an ability score improvement, instead of increasing your ability scores or taking a feat, you can instead choose a level of a class which you fit the multiclassing requirements for. The level of the class must be less than or equal to one half your total level. You gain all features granted at that level of the class that don't rely on any features you don't have. You also gain proficiencies of that class as if you had multiclassed into it.
For example, Erynith is a 4th-level dragon who wants to have some martial training that she can use when she eventually gains the ability to transform into a humanoid. Instead of taking an ability score improvement at 4th level, she takes Monstrous Versatility and can choose to gain either the first level (fighting style, second wind) or second level (action surge) features available to fighter.
