Monrel[edit]

Why do people always assume we're bats? We're foxes!

Physical Description[edit]

Monrels are tiny beasts that resemble foxes. They are capable of standing bipedally, but never even reach a height of 2 feet. Their bodies are mainly vulpine but lack some of the fur density one would expect. Its fur is closer to the length of bats. even their bushy tails are reduced in volume to reduce drag. The fur color varies from unusual shades of brown to the typical red, black, white and grey fox colors. Under their arms are flaps of skin which spread when they stretch out their arms in midair. They do this after jumping off trees to glide in a fashion similar to flying squirrels.

History[edit]

Monrels are creatures native to far off tropical islands. They are believed to have originally been foxes on the land before the islands broke off. Thus, their size shrunk due to the island rule. These islands are always full of trees and fruits, which the monrels evolved to reach and eat for survival, as well as to hunt smaller critters that could fly in the canopies. Monrels retained their predatory features despite having developed a diet that was mainly frugivorous. They were initially hostile to travelers who first came upon the islands, attacking in swarms. After initial skirmishes, the monrel diplomats were bought back to the mainland to establish peaceful relations and begin trade. Prosperity flourished a little on their islands and the monrels multiplied. It wasn't too long before the islands were too claustrophobic for them and they migrated to the mainland in droves. They were eager to explore new lands and have new adventures and experiences.

Society[edit]

Monrels live in tribes back on their islands, each revolving around the central chieftain figure who leads. The chieftain also assigns jobs to tribe members and oversees rotation of resource management, hunting and gathering, and constructions. Tribes and their villages will often host incoming guests in tournaments with contests of skills. These are mainly voluntary and in good fun. There are, however, classes within their tribes which can be influenced by their skills in these games. The higher classes enjoy higher prestige in their villages. Some despise this system and go out to adventure, free from their village constraints. If they return and are successful, they are more likely to climb a class in their tribe.

Monrels are described to have an urge for exploration from a young age. Young monrels learn to be resourceful and versatile, rather than strictly strong or book smart. They can be a jack-of-all-trades kind of adventurer, with all the skills they hone back in their tribes. They can also be extremely determined if they have a set goal in mind. Even death will not deter them from this goal.
