Way of the woodlands

Monks who study the way of the way of the woodlands draw their strength from the flora and fauna around them, embodying the wild spirit of the forest. They might be guardians of sacred groves, wanderers of ancient woods, or protectors of nature's balance. Their training involves not only martial arts but also a deep understanding of the natural world, making them formidable opponents and compassionate allies.

Monk subclass features

Level 3: Briar defense

  • Thorny vines: Your connection to nature allows you to manifest a protective layer of thorny vines. While you are not wearing armor, your AC increases by 1, and any creature that hits you with a melee attack takes 1d4 piercing damage from the thorns.
  • Natural resilience: You gain resistance to poison damage, and you have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned.

Level 6: Nature's embrace

  • Camouflage: You gain proficiency in the Stealth skill. If you are in a natural environment (such as a forest, jungle, or similar terrain), you can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured.
  • Vine whip: As a bonus action, you can use the natural energy around you to create a whip of vines. This functions as a melee weapon attack that deals 1d6 slashing damage and has the finesse property. You can use your Dexterity modifier for attack and damage rolls.

Level 11: Woodland spirit

  • Spirit of the forest: Your connection to nature deepens. You can cast the Entangle spell once per long rest without casting a spell slot. Your spell casting ability for this spell is wisdom.
  • Thorned retreat: When you take the Dash action, you can leave behind a trail of thorns. Any creature that enters this area on their next turn takes 1d6 piercing damage.

Level 17: Avatar of the wilds

  • Nature's vanguard: You have a deep bond with the natural world. You gain the ability to cast Wall of thorns once per long rest without expending a spell slot. Your spellcasting ability for this spell is wisdom.
  • Thorny resurgence: When you are reduced to 0 hip points, you can choose to drop to 1 hit point instead. When you do, you release a burst of thorns in a 10-foot radius around you. Each creature in that area takes 4d6 piercing damage. You can use this feature once per long rest.
