Mangani[edit]

Note: the word "mangani" is taken from the Tarzan franchise created by Edgar Rice Burroughs (who died in 1950 and whose works are thus now public domain). Use of the word does not imply endorsement of Burroughs' themes or ideas.

Physical Description[edit]

Mangani are large, intelligent apes who climb, leap and swing from tree to tree with great agility. Their fur ranges in colour from pitch black through chestnut to fox-red, and their skin is dark grey. Males are larger than females and grow short beards.

History[edit]

Society[edit]

Mangani are known for their exuberance and their fondness for making noise—a mangani social gathering can be heard from miles away. They also have a largely undeserved reputation for ferocious violence; this is mostly due to their protectiveness towards their children, although it is considered inadvisable to refer to mangani as "monkeys" in their hearing.

Mangani build their homes in trees, and for this reason are most common in forests, but they also live in hilly or grassy areas where the trees are relatively spaced out. Mangani tribes typically consist of a dozen adults and their children living in a cluster of basketwork tree-houses, and are almost always centred around a single leader, most often a male. The bulk of their diet is fruits and nuts, which they collect in surplus and store in securely woven baskets for the winter; but they also gather roots and tubers, green shoots, tender leaves, birds' eggs, and grubs, and they sometimes hunt birds, rodents, and small deer.

The arts best developed by mangani are the weaving of ropes and baskets. Mangani hate getting wet, and frequently sport rain-capes made of deer-skin or woven flax, though they do not wear other kinds of clothing. Large rivers in mangani territories are usually spanned by many rope-bridges slung between trees.

Mangani Names[edit]

A common convention is for each member of the tribe to be surnamed for its current leader; thus, "Kala of Toog" is a mangani named Kala from a tribe led by a mangani named Toog. If Neeta were to take over the leadership from Toog, Kala would become "Kala of Neeta".

Female: Kala, Kama, Mamka, Mumga, Neeta, Tana, Teeka, Terka, Thaka

Male: Akut, Chulk, Golot, Karnath, Malgash, Numgo, Pagth, Toog, Zuyad

Mangani Traits[edit]

Powerful, sentient apes
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2 and your Dexterity score increases by 1.
Age. Mangani reach adulthood at age 8 and live up to 50 years.
Alignment. Mangani incline strongly towards chaos, as they do not take kindly to being given orders by people they do not know personally. They are more often good than evil.
Size. Mangani are between 6 and 8 feet tall and weigh between 250 and 350 pounds. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet. You have a climbing speed of 30 feet.
Brachiate. You can swing hanging from branches or similar structures, such as the rungs of a rope bridge, by your hands. When swinging in this way, your long jump is up to 25 feet, with or without a running start.
Furry. You have advantage on Constitution checks against exhaustion due to cold, and disadvantage on checks against exhaustion due to heat.
Graceful. You are proficient in the Acrobatics skill.
Long-Limbed. When you make a melee attack on your turn, your reach for it is 5 feet greater than normal.
Opposable Toes. If your hands are occupied, you can hold, push, drag, lift, or carry objects using your feet instead. You cannot use your feet for more precise manipulation, such as attacks or tool use, unless you have another feature that grants you the ability to do so.
Powerful Build. You count as Large when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Languages. You can speak Common and Mangani. Outsiders' first impression of the Mangani language tends to be that it consists mainly of barks, grunts, hoots, and shrieks, with actual syllables few and far between. In fact these sounds are inflections which express emotion, the relationship of the speaker to the listener, and even some points of grammar. The careful listener will discover that there are always words underneath. Mangani make similar sounds when speaking other languages. Few mangani learn to read or write in any language.

Suggested Characteristics[edit]

It is common for young adult mangani to leave their homes and join neighbouring tribes, and some are drawn into adventure at this time in their lives. Older mangani may become adventurers to defend their families or to avenge fallen tribemates. Mangani in adventuring parties are often the first to leap into action, urging their companions to do the same; this may be an advantage or a liability depending on the situation.
