Magic Kanji (5e Subclass)
Magic Kanji[edit]
Rangers who join the Magic Kanji Conclave embrace a unique connection to the written word, mastering the art of Kanji. Through intricate symbols, these rangers invoke magical effects, transforming the written language into powerful vehicles of arcane might. A Kanji Caster’s prowess lies not only in their bow or blade but in the very symbols they carve into the world, turning ancient glyphs into destructive forces.
Kanji Writing[edit]
At 3rd level, you gain the ability to create and invoke magical Kanji.
- Kanji Known. You can learn 4 Kanji from the Kanji Powers list (see below). You learn 2 additional Kanji at 7th, 11th, and 15th levels. These Kanji represent magical effects you can invoke. When you gain a level in this class, you can choose to swap out one Kanji for a new one you know. This allows you to adjust your selection of Kanji based on your playstyle or the needs of a given adventure.
- Kanji Usage. You can use a Kanji effect a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus. You regain all expended uses after completing a long rest.
- Kanji Save DC. Some Kanji effects require a saving throw. The DC for these effects is calculated as follows:
- Kanji Save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier.
Kanji Powers[edit]
Kanji of Repulsion: You draw this Kanji on a surface. Any creature within 5 feet of the Kanji must succeed on a Strength saving throw (DC = 8 + proficiency bonus + Wisdom modifier) or be pushed back 10 feet. This can only be used once per long rest.
- At 5th level: Functions like the Thunderwave spell, pushing creatures back 10 feet on a failed save.
- At 11th level: Functions like the Repulsion spell, pushing creatures back 10 feet on a failed save.
Kanji of Message: You inscribe this Kanji on a surface, creating an origami bird that delivers a message (as the Animal Messenger spell). The bird delivers your message to a creature you specify within range. The Kanji progresses in power as follows:
- At 3rd level: Functions as Animal Messenger. The bird delivers your message to a creature within 5 miles of you.
- At 5th level: The Kanji functions as Animal Messenger, but the range increases to 50 miles, and the message can be delivered to any creature (not just animals).
- At 7th level: The Kanji now functions like Sending, allowing you to send a brief message to a creature you know, regardless of distance, with no need for an animal intermediary. The creature can reply in kind.
- At 15th level: The Kanji becomes even more powerful, granting you the ability to send a message across planes of existence, similar to Plane Shift (requiring you to know the plane the target is on), as long as the creature is still alive.
Kanji of Illusion: You create an illusion as if cast by the spell Silent Image or Disguise Self. When a creature approaches the symbol, it triggers the illusion effect of your choice.
- At 7th level, you can cast Major Image using this ability.
- At 15th level, you can cast Hallucinatory Terrain once per long rest using this ability.
Kanji of Light: You create a glowing Kanji that illuminates a 10-foot radius with bright light and an additional 10 feet of dim light. The light lasts for 1 hour or until dismissed, as per the Light spell.
- At 7th level: You can cast Daylight once per long rest using this ability.
- At 15th level: You can cast Sunbeam once per long rest using this ability.
Magic Weapon Kanji: You can inscribe this Kanji on a non-magical weapon, causing it to glow with magical energy, as if cast by the Magic Weapon spell. The weapon becomes magical and gains a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls. You must concentrate to maintain the effect. The Kanji lasts for up to 1 hour or until your concentration is broken.
- At 7th level: The Kanji now grants a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls.
- At 15th level: The Kanji grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls, and the weapon deals an additional 1d6 radiant or necrotic damage (your choice).
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 hour
Enlarge/Reduce Kanji: You place this Kanji on a target, causing it to grow or shrink in size as if affected by the Enlarge/Reduce spell. The target’s size changes by one size category for the duration.
- At 7th level: You can affect one additional target with the Kanji.
- At 15th level: You can affect creatures within a 30-foot radius, and the target’s Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores are also increased or decreased by 2, respectively.
Duration: 1 minute.
Silence Kanji: You inscribe this Kanji on a surface, creating an area of magical silence in a 20-foot radius, as if cast by the Silence spell. The effects last for the duration.
- At 7th level: The radius increases to 30 feet.
- At 15th level: You can use your action to target a creature within the area of effect, forcing them to succeed on a Constitution saving throw or be unable to cast spells for 1 minute.
Duration: 1 minute.
Teleportation Kanji: You inscribe this Kanji on a surface, allowing you to teleport as if cast by the Misty Step, Teleportation Circle, or Teleport spell.
- At 7th level: You can use Misty Step (as a bonus action) to teleport up to 30 feet to a space you can see.
- At 15th level: You can use Teleport to teleport to a location you are familiar with, or Teleportation Circle to create a linked circle that allows others to teleport to that location.
Duration: The effect lasts until the Kanji is used.
Lightweight Kanji: You inscribe this Kanji on an object, reducing its weight to a fraction of its original weight. This effect works similarly to the Levitate spell, allowing you to lift the object with ease.
- At 7th level: The object becomes light enough to carry or move easily, reducing its weight to one-quarter of its normal weight, as if under the effects of Levitate.
- At 15th level: You can reduce the weight of larger objects or creatures, making them lighter by half, allowing them to float gently as though affected by the Levitate spell.
Duration: 1 hour.
Superior Kanji[edit]
At 11th level, you unlock the ability to inscribe powerful Superior Kanji. You learn the following effects and can invoke one Superior Kanji per long rest:
- Kanji of the Snowstorm: When activated, a blizzard of icy wind and snow emanates from the Kanji, filling a 20-foot radius. Creatures within the area must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or fall prone as the area becomes difficult terrain. Concentration spells cast within the area require a successful Constitution saving throw to maintain.
- Kanji of Location: You write this Kanji and name or describe a creature within 300 feet that you’ve seen before. You sense its direction and distance, even if it’s hidden or invisible. If the creature moves, you sense its movement for 1 minute.
- Kanji of Elemental Equipment: You inscribe this Kanji on a weapon, imbuing it with radiant (Yang) or necrotic (Yin) energy. Choose one effect:
- Yang (Radiance): The weapon glows with light, dealing an additional 3d8 radiant damage on a hit. Undead or fiends take double damage.
- Yin (Shadow): The weapon is imbued with dark energy, dealing an additional 2d10 necrotic damage. On a hit, the target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or you gain 5 temporary hit points.
Path of the Tainted Ink[edit]
At 13th level, you have mastered the shadowy aspects of Kanji's power. While in dim light or darkness, you can use your bonus action to meld into the shadows, hiding within your Kanji ink. You can use the Hide action even if you're in an area of light, as long as you're within dim light or darkness. Additionally, as an action, you can cast Darkness centered on a Kanji symbol you inscribe. The darkness lasts for 1 minute and moves with you, allowing you to stay hidden within it.
Path of the Crystalline Ink[edit]
At 13th level, your mastery of Kanji grants you the ability to glimpse into the past through written words. By spending 1 minute interacting with a written text or Kanji, you experience visions of its creator's history, identity, and intentions. Additionally, you can decipher any written language and gain insight into the history and magical properties of glyphs or runes you encounter.
In combat, you can use your knowledge of ancient Kanji to enhance your attacks. As a bonus action, you can inscribe a symbol of power on a surface, weapon, or creature within 30 feet. For 1 minute, you gain a +2 bonus to attack rolls or deal an extra 1d6 force damage with your weapon attacks. The symbol fades once the effect ends or you are incapacitated.
