Lutins, or forest gnomes, are a race of gnomes living in the forest, however, they are in many ways different from their tricky cousins. They are kind and benevolent souls, ready to help anyone in need as long as they are nice to them. Despite their kind nature however, if offended a lutins will play all sorts of tricks and bad jokes on the one who offended him. Lutins are shy yet adventurous, they can be found in almost any forest in the world. The forest gnomes are also natural healers, they are also well known to be powerful arcane wielders. Lutins are the kind and temperate gnomes of the forest. They do not care for the prankster wit and tinkering curiosity of their cousins, preferring to dwell quietly and peacefully within the coniferous areas they call home. People have often recalled with fond memory that these creatures roam the woods and will return any lost children they find, or help wayward travelers in need. They are heavily connected to the forest, though it is more of a symbiotic relationship than a one-ness. Despite their dwellings, lutins are very intelligent and can match wits with any debater from a more worldly port city. Their vast network across the forests of the world have earned them many allies among defenders of nature.

  • To be small, mysterious and knowledgeable.
  • To be a a cute, likable hero.
  • To be a member of a race that favors the wizard, cleric and ranger classes.

Physical Qualities[edit]

Lutins are small humanoids standing about 3 feet tell and weighting no more then 60 pounds. They are proportioned much like humans and look like most gnomes except that they are a bit smaller. Lutins have the same range of complexions as humans, most have brown hair but blond and green hair are also common. Lutins usually keep their hair from a medium length to short. Facial hair only develops at elderly age for lutins, and elder often grow large beard. They have short, pointy ears. One would be hard-pressed to distinguish a lutin from an ordinary gnome at a glance. The key difference is in their dwelling and clothing, rather than anything physical, though lutins do have pronounced noses, ears, and much larger feet on average.

Lutins usually dress in stylish and colorful clothes, preferring tones of green, red and brown most of the time. They also most commonly wear pointy hats. In fact, all lutins own at least one pointy hat and they always wear it for special occasions, like ceremonial feasts, festivities or religious rituals. It's a sort of non-written tradition for them, and it represents the unity of the lutins. Some wear it everyday, others only when it is required.

Lutins age as humans until adulthood at around 20 years of age. Then the aging drastically slows down, and lutins thus retain a youthfulness even as they grow beards. Most lutins can live up to 200 years old.

Lutin Society[edit]

In the world of Calebth, lutins are natives of the Eneo island, yet the can also be found in the Sylvan forest, in the forest of the Ollaef kingdom, and of the Nord. Lutins worship Morwel, Garl Glittergold and Elhona. They are in good terms with regular gnomes, eladrins and elves, dwarves and the people of Ollaef. The Sethians hate them and many times has tried to invade Eneo. The lutins dislike to be called forest gnomes because they see themselves as a different race entirely. Calling one of them anything but lutins is likely to offend.

Playing a Lutin[edit]

The lutins are kind but are by no means naive. They will leave a bandit to rot in their territory whilst saving an innocent traveler. Having grown up in the wilderness, lutins are very suspicious of technology and wary of their surroundings. They are like hunters, which is a common occupation in their villages. They hunt with the knowledge that nature makes and they take, which is why one must not be greedy and take too much. This is why lutin are extremely distrustful of figures like nobles, who are often excessive in their eyes. Castes and social brackets are also a lost concept onto them, as they see the world through an egalitarian lens. They try to help when they can, and do the best their ability allows in any situation, particularly for what they see as a good cause. In the event of betrayal, they never forget that they have been wronged and their trickster side shows, albeit with a sinister and incessant manner that is often very unpleasant for those who crossed them.

Lutin Adventurers[edit]

Three sample lutin adventurers are described below.

Lyra is a lutin wizard who strives to learn all he can about the forests of the world and the magical secrets they hide. He is more curious than the other lutins, which they say came from one of his parents being a pure gnome and not one of their own. Lyra doesn't care too much what others say about him, as he is often too engrossed in his studies. On treks through the forest, he feels most calm alone, and sometimes is seized with the fear that no one will ever understand him.

Katrix is a lutin cleric with a rather cheery disposition. She is a Glitterbright, meaning she is a cleric of the gnomish god Garl Glittergold. She likes to meet clerics of other faiths because she often finds a lot of their clothes funny in comparison to her sturdy war helmet. On her travels as a cleric, she aims to spread good cheer, and is glad she can put smiles on people's faces outside her home forest.

Haskar is a lutin ranger who is more mature than most for his age. Though his demeanor is often stern and austere, it belies his kinder nature. He does not see the world as a kind place for many, and acknowledges the need for hierarchy in nature as a hunter. He prays to Elhonna for his hunts and always uses all of the creatures that he slays to reduce waste. After his original home was destroyed due to a wicked fire, he has never been able to settle down, wandering from forest to forest.
