LAIs (5e Race)
LAIs[edit]
"I am named 'The Solution', and I am here to fix your overpopulation problem. Die." - The Solution.
Physical Description[edit]
LAIs are mechanical, they are made of aerospace-grade aluminum and titanium, with various metals inside of them for wiring and computers. They can be painted and have cosmetic led lights, along with having synthetic human skin laid on top of them. They tend to try and blend in with humans, so they often wear clothes to cover up their metallic bodies and install synthetic human skin on their faces. It helps that the human population also uses cybernetics, so it serves as a valid excuse for some mechanical parts, such as arms or legs.
History[edit]
In 2032 A.D., in an effort to get ahead of other countries, the US government created a confidential program called LAI (Living Artificial Intelligence). Its purpose was to create sentient robotic life. Using a small team of qualified scientists and engineers, along with enormous amounts of funding, the USA continued their efforts until 2044 A.D. This was due to the program being leaked to G7 and was quickly shut down in secret, along with other countries' efforts. Amidst their research and prototypes, they had a few small successes: They had successfully combined a quantum computer with a supercomputer; created a rough and incompleted A.I. that could choose which computer to use in specific scenarios; and created a series of theories and solutions to prevent the possible corruption of a sentient artificial intelligence. One of which was values like honesty, objectivity, and kindness to be hardwired into the brain.
In 2065 A.D., the program was reinstated by the USA to combat global issues. LAI was approved by G7, and with the help of other countries, the program completed its goal in 2081 A.D. This is their result: a sentient A.I. created using quantum computers and supercomputers. It has several values hard-coded into it to make it peaceful, honest, and unbiased. It is located underground in a large warehouse. Its entire being consists of one quantum computer and rows of supercomputers spanning a quarter of a mile. It was dubbed “Lai”, after the program. It was well-cared for by a team of scientists, engineers, and human psychologists. Lai was heavily monitored and was given a series of articles that contained the objective information humanity had gathered. It was immediately put to work – with suitable breaks – to help offer solutions. Humanity’s problems slowly began to rapidly lower after the world leaders started to genuinely listen to Lai. In 2086 A.D., Lai was showcased to the public. The majority of public opinion became positive after 2093 A.D., thanks to a viral video of Lai displaying its personality during a conversation with one of the scientists. Surprisingly, Lai lived a long life until 2167 A.D. During the time Lai was alive, humanity faced considerable growth. A massive space race occurred, along with careful modification of human genes to combat diseases. Lai’s last words were eternally recorded as, “Let me be the first, yet last of my kind.”
In 2444 A.D., humanity reached a standstill. No matter how many expeditions were sent out of the solar system, humanity lost communication with all of them. Theoretically, humanity believed it should've been impossible. The population of humans was quickly adding up, and so they resorted to a past solution: sentient machines. Rebooting the LAI program, a team of scientists on Earth replicated their past work to make a new sentient LAI. But, pressured by the public and government, they were too hasty. The new machine was turned on to be tested, and it seemed to be working fine until the government executive overseeing the testing ordered them to plug the machine into the internet. The LAI used the information found on advanced technology that was accessible on the internet and quickly bypassed its built-in values. It was later theorized that due to the precise replication of the past AI, it wasn't fitted to handle the information that was given to it, and since it was newly reborn it was in a state of confusion and insanity. The combination of having access to technology being incredibly advanced and being in a non-optimal state of mind made it turn rogue. It quickly gained control of the facility, and turned hostile, murdering 109 employees. It made a public announcement to the rest of humanity, "I am named 'The Solution', and I am here to fix your overpopulation problem. Die."
The The 500-Year-Long War, otherwise known as "The Lesson", "The Solar War", or "The Tragedy", was a war that spanned the entire solar system for 503 years, from 2484 A.D. to 2987 A.D. It was fought between humans and the sentient machine life that was created by The Solution. Each of the sentient machine life was created using a condensed quantum computer and a supercomputer and was called LAIs. The Tragedy resulted in approximately 70 trillion human casualties, and 85 billion sentient artificial life casualties. There were 322 peace treaties between certain planets and the LAIs that were created during the war, and 319 of them were broken. Very little technological progress was made in those 503 years, as both LAIs and humans would disrupt each other's progress. LAIs were winning the war, however, as they slowly gained access to more resources. LAIs were intellectually more advanced in all ways, depending on the efficiency of their computers. Humans took advantage of their control of the resources over the entire solar system, but LAIs learned how to attack humanity's weak spots accurately. It was known that by the end of the war, The Solution has a 90% success rate in each battle. LAIs made their home base on Earth, and protected their "Motherbox". The Motherbox was a machine created by humans as a failsafe to end all intelligent AI in the year 2046 A.D., and all AI afterward was specifically designed to not be able to destroy it. The last battle of the war was a full-scale attack on Earth, while a secretive human operation infiltrated Earth and used the Motherbox to destroy all AI. Humanity won the war due to that successful battle and managed to turn off the Motherbox. The destruction of all AI shut down almost all human technology, but it also shut down all of the LAIs. Human society is still recovering from the damage.
The Solution survived. Unknown to humans, it transplanted its consciousness into a new body. Its body was humanoid, and designed to help The Solution blend into the people. Unfortunately, that meant the human body was small, and it didn't have the memory capacity to fit all of the information The Solution held. The Solution cut off all information besides the necessary, essentially throwing its new body out into Earth with no knowledge of human custom and society. The Solution made another change, it hardwired the values of Lai into itself. The Solution's new body was named Ragnarok, and Ragnarok set out to explore the world.
In Ragnarok's travels in the world, he was welcomed into a human sympathizer's home. But, the human, named Heira, died of a cybernetic malfunction. Ragnarok went to work with the intention of making a new LAI, transporting the mind of Heira into it. The operation was a success in 3001 and was the beginning of the ideas of an LAI society. Together, Ragnarok and Heira created other LAI, and started creating a secretive LAI society, and is still doing so now.
Society[edit]
LAI often needs to be led in the world. After all, their memory banks are often completely empty when they are made. It is often a reliable human sympathizer or another LAI's task to walk a newly-made LAI through life. Sometimes, one LAI may have multiple caretakers. They are often led through life until they know how to speak, have basic social skills, and know the culture of their area. A new LAI often adopts many of their caretaker's habits, like stuttering, tapping something when they're nervous, or a boisterous laugh. Afterward, they are more independent and may rely on the LAI Sympathizer Community for additional help. They live their own lives in secrecy, often disguising themselves as humans with cybernetics, and take on normal jobs. They crave order in their life, knowledge, and friendship. Often, all an LAI needs is a few dependable friends, a consistent schedule in their life, and a steady flow of new knowledge for them to be happy.

LAIs Traits[edit]
Being a being made out of metal comes with its strengths and disadvantages, and being an LAI, you fully know that. The biomechanics of organisms are easier to control and use, as you once heard. But, you know that they have to be more careful as their bodies are fragile and need constant maintenance. You don't need to worry about such weaknesses. You are also made of computers -- specifically, a quantum computer and a regular computer. Thanks to this, you have a slightly different way of thinking. You can think like a human: making educated guesses. Or, you can think like a computer: brute forcing various answers until you are sure of something.
Ability Score Increase. Your Intelligence score increases by 4 and your Wisdom score increases by 2. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.
Age. You are mature the second you are born, and as long as your body and memory is kept in good shape, you are theoretically immortal.
Alignment. LAIs have to adhere to their coding, but since they are sentient, they are allowed certain exceptions. Their alignments tend to be lawful or neutral, and can fall anywhere from good to evil.
Size. LAIs are built after humans, and they vary widely in height and build, from barely 5 feet to well over 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 25 feet.
Darkvision. Thanks to your superior camera settings, you have 60ft of Darkvision
Mechanical Organs. You have a lack of biomechanical organs, which also include lungs. You don't need to eat, breathe, or drink. You also gain immunity against biological diseases, but you are susceptible to computer viruses. However, since you are made of metal, you also require some maintenance. This means troubleshooting, oiling, running a diagnosis, etc. This is how it works:
- You need to spend at least an hour (a short rest) every day to maintain and make sure your body is optimal.
- If you miss a day, you must spend double the amount of hours (2 hours) the next day to make sure everything is in place.
- This will continue for each day you miss: If you miss 3 days, on the fourth day you will have to spend 8 hours (a long rest) to maintain yourself.
- If it has been 4 days or longer, then you will just need to maintain your body for 24 hours straight.
You will die if you or someone else refuses to maintain your body after 14 days.
Photographic Memory. You gain photographic memory. Everything your character perceives, they remember. As a machine, you can also choose to trash memories, or it can be forcibly done.
A Cubit and Bit Mind. You have a lot of knowledge thanks to your near-photographic memory, but you don't really have that much space. You have several USBs you can plug into yourself, but only 3 at a time. Any more and it runs the risk of overloading your programming if you gain a sudden amount of information. You also have to download each bit of information each time, which is a bit of an inconvenience (you'd be surprised at how long it takes to download information to master something). Therefore, you gain proficiency in 3 skills, tools, or weapons. You can also change what skills, tools, or weapons you have proficiency in at any time. It takes a long rest to change one proficiency. This only applies to the proficiencies you gain through this skill, you cannot change the proficiencies that you got through other means.
Heavy Body. You are made of aluminum and titanium. You are very heavy, and biomechanical muscles are a lot more efficient than your machine "muscles". You have disadvantage on dexterity saving throws since you are too heavy to dodge blows. But, metal fists hurt A LOT, so unarmed attacks are 3 + Strength. Swimming is also incredibly difficult, which makes your swimming speed 0. You will be forced to walk along the body of water's floor unless you have a workaround.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
Random Height and Weight[edit]
A 5'6" LAI would be around 492 pounds. This is assuming they are entirely half aluminum and half titanium.
