Kaltamorn Regional Magic, Ether, & More[edit]
In Teon ideas like hitpoints, spell slots, experience points, and more are supposed to have lore-based explanations. These sorts of things are called Paranormal Universal Factors or P.U.F.s for short. This section is intended to help explain P.U.F.s among other things.
Ether[edit]
In Teon there are three types of ether: light, gray, and dark. Light and dark ether manifest themselves around the souls of living creatures based on their morals and values or lack thereof. This ether binds them to the universe in different ways. Most notably it binds them to what are called Paranormal Universal Factors (P.U.F.) such as “experience points”, “hitpoints”, “skill points”, and so on. The ether near an individual also has the effect of manifesting auras around various subjects. And it is because of ether that one is capable of detecting magic, evil, good, and so on.
Light Ether[edit]
Light ether can manifest itself as a response to the skills and talents of an individual and can help them to become stronger in their lifestyle. While light ether is said to be some of the more mysterious of the three, it is speculated that it is directly related to what are called “experience points”. That said, little is known for sure about light ether and people are still uncertain of whether or not it has anything to do with experience points at all. But the prevailing theory is that it does
Gray Ether[edit]
Gray ether can become either light or dark ether for any given reason and is consequentially the most unpredictable variety of ether. One thing that has been discovered is how the actions and viewpoints of a living creature have the tendency to affect the type of ether nearest to them. One result that has been linked to gray ether is the appearance of various miscellaneous items in old and/or abandoned places. Studies in ether have noted how gray ether, a substance that reflects reality and alters it in response, may sometimes manifest treasure that reflects the surrounding environment. This is why adventurers occasionally discover chests and loot in abandoned dungeons, in the middle of the woods, underwater, etc.
Dark Ether[edit]
Dark ether has the nasty habit of manifesting various foul creatures where it is most concentrated, and on the very rare occasion in other places as well. This is the reason why not every monster found in an ancient tomb, cavern, or dungeon has an explicit reason for being there. It is entirely possible that dark ether may have spawned them, however unlikely. Worse yet, sometimes dark ether can concentrate itself in abandoned places as it has the tendency to repel itself from other people, much like how evil behavior tends to isolate people from others. Pooling up like rainwater, dark ether can accumulate in abandoned places and/or remote locations and spawn a plethora of monsters of numerous varieties in various places.
Experience Points[edit]
Whenever a person undergoes an event that tests their very mettle and/or identity, the universe responds to this event and manifests itself in that individual. In a way, the person shapes the environment of the very fabric of reality and the fabric of reality responds to them. This is how experienced adventurers, who undergo numerous dangerous and trying experiences in their careers, can end up being very very strong. It is because of their especially strong symbiotic link with the PUF that is the universe's penchant for experience points.
Quantifying experience points falls under the science known as “experiology” practiced by various mages in an attempt to understand the nature of power itself. One such discovery was that experience points could be spent and removed from a person in the process of creating various magical items and substances. It can be said that the individual spending the points is channeling the universe into the target. However, despite the numerous attempts undergone by various mages, it does not seem possible to transfer experience points to other living creatures. If and when this is done the experience points only seem to dissipate and vanish. Indeed the points reflect the individual and if they are transferred then their link to the individual they manifested in is severed and they realign with the universe.
