History

Jironde is the descendant and heir of the Inerian bloodlines of the 1st Age. The ancient country, long subsumed into the cultural blood and memory of Illyria, once stretched north from the Dromos Athos along the Arythi Coast almost to present day Valmorra. Jironde was established on the far side of the Narrow Sea as the city of Jinesti, and survived the Illyrian Unification under King John the Great. Most of the Inerian nobility, unwilling to bow to the new kingdom, left early in the war and many of their countrymen followed in the years before the Second Great War. Jinesti survived as the center of a fledgling and then spreading Inerian state. The quiet country bred an easy lifestyle and the people of Jinesti spread north and south along the Tatra Mountains. Farming, lumber, furs, and livestock came easy to the men of the area and Jinesti traded across the Narrow Sea and eventually south to the expanding human cities of Beldron. Trade with the Dwarves of the mountains, elves of the plateau, and beast nations on the eastern side of the mountains bolstered Jinesti's trade and the little city had a heyday in the mid-2nd Age.

Prosperity came at a price however, and Jinesti was unable to pay the piper. Or the armies of southern Beldron. Jinesti fell to the warbands armies of the south in the mid/late-2nd Age, along with most of their trade partners. The Inerians of Jinesti's domain surrendered to the southerners after an ugly war, and fell under a hard regime. A junta of southern warlords set up camp in the area and didn't march their men south with the rest of their kin. These generals and their men settled in and fed off of the area like the plague. The beast nations on the western planes were wiped out after the war, and the dwarves left for the mainland. The Inerians resisted though, culturally sick and infuriated after having their homeland consumed for a second time. Maren the Dawnsword, a man hitherto unknown to the histories, would lead his people to victory. Jirondi history records his attacks: lightning raids at first but then small battles. Then they record his famous duels against the warlords, cutting down his enemies before the assembled armies one by one. Maren's revolution was a spiritual one as well, dedicated to Heironeous and Pelor. He spurred the Inerians into fervent faith as his campaign mounted and the final battle with the last warlords approached. It is said that at that final battle a raging storm surrounded the field but a break in the clouds allowed pure sunlight to wreath the Inerian host in radiance. Maren led the army to victory that day, and reputedly ascended to sainthood in the arms of a Solar.

Whatever the truth of the battle, the truth of the aftermath is indisputable. The Inerians began to rebuild their city and their countryside with gusto. A new city was built onto the ruins and foundations of the original. The new city would be called Jironde, a Beldroni twist on the original name. Mighty basilicas to Pelor and Heironeous complete with sprawling grounds, living areas, libraries, and schools took up the center of the city. Alongside that a palace of worked stone and government district to match the acropoli of ancient Inerian cities' went up and beyond them the new city spread. Within two generations of Saint Maren Dawnsword his people were once again a prosperous state in the world. The Ages since have seen many rises and falls in fortunes for the city, but none quite so dramatic. Jironde survived the Dynastic Period of Beldroni history with their culture intact, and their men fought in the Winter War that saw the Sapphire Kingdom fall and ushered in the latest era of city states to Beldron. These days Jironde presides over a well ordered realm of farmers, trappers, lumbermen, and traders that spreads from the plains south of the Rannes river to the Gap of Lucarne.

City

The people of Jironde are often regarded in passing as a religious people who inhabit the eastern shores of Upper Beldron. Despite their long history and historically recent success in the Winter War and before, Jironde is to many merely a stable theocratic monarchy. This simplification is only true in the most general senses though. That is: Jironde has a hereditary ruler, and the Jirondi are generally more religious than the rest of the Beldroni. The Jirondi countryside is actually quite unique to Beldron, and in more than their piety. The land is a homogenous realm of connected settlements that spreads across a comparably large area, united by true culture, that have followed the same rulers for more than an Age. The Inerian culture of Jironde is much different from the predominately Mediterranean (placeholder, it's after midnight) cultures of much of Beldron. Ineri culture predates the Arythi as well, and is closer to Albian or Northlander or even Mantaeri. The Inerians' sense of belonging and industrious work as part of their nation spreads beyond their city and well into the hills and forests of the Tatra Mountains. Many of the Tatran hillmen are Inerian and know it well, frequently trading in the city or living on the slopes outside when the weather gets cold.
