Ioun-Born[edit]
“ | What you lack in wisdom, allow me to provide you troglodytes. | ” |
Physical Description[edit]
The ioun-born are humanoids born blessed by the power of the goddess of knowledge. They are born with pale skin and a marking on their head that appears to be an open eye, the symbol of Ioun. As they mature, their eyes are known to change to a vibrant blue, and the mark on their head also changes to the same color. Other than that, they pass fairly easily for normal humans. At their height of maturity, the eye on their head is known to pop out and become something like an ioun stone. This stone can be sued only by the one who produced it, and is considered sacred for all ioun-born.
History[edit]
It is said that, when Ioun saw the fallibility of even gods like Tharizdun, who was driven mad by a shard of evil due to his lust for power, she began to distrust mortals. While she vowed she would never be like Vecna, she saw that mortals were often too weak to follow the ways of righteous knowledge. They were easily misinformed and misled to commit horrible deeds and often did not correct their mistakes. Thus, she sought out the souls on their way from the Fugue Plane who were to be reborn. Picking champions among them, she selected the smartest and wisest to be marked with her approval. They would be the ioun-born, placed into new bodies, a guiding beacon for the mortal realm.
Society[edit]
Ioun-born are not numerous. The souls blessed with the mark of Ioun are few. They recognize each other easily, however, and will stick together when they do. For them, the world is a place rife with stupidity and foolishness, which they are sent to correct in the name of the goddess. Thus, they must help one another to achieve these goals. Because they are often sure of their own word, they can be quick to disregard others as fools or be condescending towards them. The worst ioun-born pursue evil ends with good intentions, like creating a hive mind so that everyone will know everything, and no one will be ignorant again.

Usually, ioun-born have names that their birth parents give them. But when they reach the age of maturity, they get a new name from a vision by Ioun herself.
