Horseflies are hybrids of horse and fly, generally thought to have been the result of magical experimentation. They have the heads and bodies of horses, along with six horse-like legs, but the wings and eyes of a fly.
Some unpleasant sorts prefer horseflies over normal horses, as not only can they fly, but they will also eat just about anything, even rotten food and garbage. The fact that most people find horseflies look rather unsettling is another benefit.
