Half-Roc (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
Half-Roc[edit]
"Do you believe in the winds of fate? Well, who do you think stirs them."
Physical Description[edit]
The Half-Roc are a race consisting of avian/human physiology, Similar to harpys but with larger sizes and wings to compensate for more mass that they carry. Besides some areas of their body containing natural human characteristics, their arms and legs have the most notable differences. The arms as one would expect given the name, have large wings attached, starting close to the shoulder blade these wings put regular harpy wings to shame, with the downside of needing larger than normal open spaces to take off. Their wings can fold up surprisingly well allowing them to enter more confined spaces though they will have to find more room to open them fully to stretch. Each wing has a talon on the out edger similar to a large thumb, they can carry rudimentary small items, or use both wings to hold other specific items like backpacks, plates, even helping to cradle another being in their wings. Besides their arms, their legs also carry the blunt of their abnormal physical traits possessing large talons and more hardened skin starting below the knee. These Talons are not only extremely large and sharp, but the digits are surprisingly dexterous able to make gestures and carry more complex objects. Couple this with the fact that the legs are sturdy and allow them to stand on 1 foot with ease they can potentially wield heavier 1 handed weapons and even cast spells, however, 2 handed spells and weapons require flight to use. Other than that some individuals have tail feathers sprouting around the tail bone region, have abnormally sharp teeth, and possess Elf-like ears sometimes naked while other individuals can have them coated in feathers.
History[edit]
Half-rocs originated from the ungodly mating between a Roc and a Harpy, Though there have been reports of humans experimenting with roc eggs using harpy or even human DNA to alter their contents. The meeting between a harpy and a roc is not that common, though rocs usually prey upon the smaller winged creatures harpies themself actually respect and look up to Rocs as they are like gods to them. Perhaps this is where the mating incidents occur, larger female harpies mating with young male rocs doesn't sound so far fetched. Without going into further detail as to how they mate, what is after effects? Sometimes the Roc eats the mate after they copulate, other times the harpy takes off and raises the kids themself. A Roc meeting a Half-Roc evokes no special emotions, maybe to mate but otherwise they just see them as another roc which usually have widespread territories and are usually loners. Harpies, however, see Half-Rocs as giants among them and respect them greatly. Most Half-Roc men get a lot of attention from women, and Half-Roc women generally get first pickings of men. Freakishly, Not all Half-Rocs feel at home in their harpy societies, some have varied personalities and travel to many nations in search of meaning or riches as a lot of harpies anjoy shiny treasure.
Society[edit]
There are two types of Half-Rocs: The harpy society and the traveling society. The Harpy society rocs are generally more rash and bullheaded, aggressive if you will. they dress loosely or are just naked and stand out as bullies or even leaders in their harpy societies, ruling the roosts. They are capable of rallying the harpies for raids or even war on towns, cities, and other species colonies. The Half-Rocs in these societies generally focus on 3 things: Food, Copulation, and fame. This leads them to being quite dull and easily trickable. The other type of Half-Roc, the traveling nomadic variety, tend to be surprisingly diverse. Some are linguistic researchers and explorers, some becomes adventurers seeking treasure, and others settle for day to day jobs. The Half-Rocs in these societies have their moods dependant on how their surroundings are and how life is going. These species have a saying coined from others species called "Roc Bottom", which is essentially depression. This can come from bullying, poor luck, or poor diet.
