Shapechanger. The doppelganger can use its action to polymorph into a Small or Medium humanoid it has seen, or back into its true form. Its statistics, other than its size, are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.

Ambusher. The doppelganger has advantage on attack rolls against any creature it has surprised.

Detect Thoughts. The doppelganger continuously reads the surface thoughts of the closest creature within 60 feet of it. The effect can penetrate barriers, but 3 feet of wood or dirt, 2 feet of stone, 2 inches of metal or a thin sheet of lead blocks it. While the target is in range, the doppelganger can continue reading its thoughts, as long as the doppelganger's concentration isn't broken. While reading the target's mind, the doppelganger as advantage on Wisdom and Charisma checks against the target. The doppelganger can start or stop detecting thoughts at any time (no action required).

Innate Spellcasting. The doppelganger's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 14). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components.

1/day each: confusion, haste, mirror image

Surprise Attack. If the doppelganger surprises a creature and hits it with an attack during the first round of combat, the target takes an extra 10 (3d6) damage from the attack.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The doppelganger makes two melee attacks.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage.

Your time has come primates!
—A greater doppelganger revealing itself.

The greater doppelganger is a more powerful and malevolent variant of the common doppelganger. This monster can assume the shape of any humanoid creature between four and eight feet in height, just as a common doppelganger. Greater doppelgangers have powers of telepathy, which allow them to peer deeper into the minds of intended victims, and assume forms that are disarming to their prey; once the victim is off-guard, the greater doppelganger takes its prey in its arms and hits the victim in the back with its slam. Some of these shapechangers take care to shape their claws so the wounds inflicted, which still deal the same damage, appear to be deep dagger or sword thrusts.

Depraved Shapeshifters. Greater doppelgangers are made, not born. When a skilled doppelganger eats the brain of a creature it is currently impersonating, it unlocks an occult connection between victim and victor. Since few doppelgangers have a taste for flesh, this is an uncommon occurrence. Greater doppelgangers are anything but evil and depraved. They seek out new victims to devour and gain the memories of, taking the doppelganger habit of using people to a logical, consumptive conclusion. Lesser doppelgangers of an evil disposition often gather underneath them, but the greater doppelganger is usually sure to prevent its minions from learning the secret of how to become a greater doppelganger themselves. Greater doppelgangers, unsurprisingly, do not trust other members of their own kind. The greater doppelgangers are sophisticated and clever. With their abilities to permanently adopt certain identities, their plans and goals often go beyond simple hunting or theft. They can often penetrate social and political power groups without arousing suspicion.
