Pounce. If the giant ant lion moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a bite attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone and grappled by the giant ant lion, the giant ant lion can move up to 20 feet along the same line as a bonus action.

ACTIONS

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 14) if they are Medium or smaller and must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 22 (4d10) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Giant ant lions, much like their lesser brethren, spend the majority of their life in their larval stage, though due to their greater size this is roughly a dozen years. In this larval stage, they primarily ambush Medium ungulates, such as deer, boars, and unsuspecting travelers and their mounts.

Variant: Giant Ant Lion Lacewing

Giant ant lions typically only spend their last year as an adult, which resembles a praying mantis clad in transparent wings. This stage in the lifecycle exclusively serves to plant eggs in potential new pits; they barely eat, and can not defend themselves from similarly giant predators. A giant ant lion lacewing has a Challenge Rating of 3, loses its bite attack and burrow speed, gains a flying speed of 30 feet, and gains the following action:

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one Medium or smaller target. Hit: 1 piercing damage, and the target must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 11 (2d10) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

A Giant Ant Lion's Lair

A giant ant lion makes its lair in vast deserts, where it digs a 20-foot radius pit trap. This pit trap counts as difficult terrain while moving away from the center unless the creature has a burrowing speed.

The giant ant lion typically waits for a creature to come within 10 feet of the pit trap's center before pouncing and either biting it to death. If the initial bite does not kill the target, it will typically drag the target beneath the sand, where they begin to suffocate and must use their burrowing or climbing speed to escape.

A giant ant lion encountered in its lair has a Challenge Rating of 6.
