Fylgja (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
Fylgja[edit]
The Fylgja are nothing if not frustrating. Though I suppose that is par for the course for Fey-touched creatures.— Researcher Aloro, Central University of Magic
Physical Description[edit]
The fylgja in their natural form, by Elpenor |
Roughly the same height and build as Elves, the fylgja are notably blue-skinned and have a peculiar pattern along some parts of their body; specifically, their skin tends to darken towards their extremities, the tips of their noses, and across their eyes. This gives them a raccoon-like appearance, which is amplified by their unique eyes: dark sclera, blue or violet irises, and a pupil ringed with gold. However, a fylgja's coloration is subject to change. Young or particularly passionate fylgja shift to different colors, much like a chameleon, when experiencing states of heightened emotion. Older fylgja have learned to train this ability and can put it to use at will, allowing them to blend in with Half-Elves if they so desire.
The Goddess of Moonlight[edit]
The most common theory as to the origin of the fylgja is some sort of involvement from Sehanine Moonbow, the Fey goddess of the moon and of dreams. This is because the fylgja has a magically strong connection to dreams and dream-related magic. However, they are not half-fey, despite their somewhat alien appearance, though they share some characteristics with other distant fey relations (such as Elves). Fylgja are also unique in their reproduction; when a fyglja reproduces with a human, their child will be a human about half the time and a fylgja half the time, but more strangely, when fylgja reproduce with one another, this is still true. Two fylgja are as likely to have a completely human child as a human and a fylgja. More strangely, two humans will very rarely produce a fylgja child despite no Fey in either parent's bloodline.
The Dreamscape[edit]
Fylgja have one peculiar ability that stands out even beyond their mild shapeshifting abilities: they have total control over their dreams. They forget them at about the same rate humans do, but while they are dreaming, they are fully lucid. Moreover, they have the ability, while dreaming, to enter the dreams of others, something they must learn to control much like their shapeshifting. This characteristic makes fylgja shunned and feared almost as much as Changelings are, but since this ability is only possible while they're asleep, the common folk aren't roused into violence towards fylgja with the same fervor as they are towards Changelings. Finally, and strangest of all, fylgja can act as a sort of bridge between dreams and reality. They can take objects with them into their dreams, and they can then remove those objects later, completely unchanged. This ability continues to baffle arcanists the world over because it appears it can only occur when unobserved.
Fylgja Names[edit]
Due to the nature of Fylgja reproduction, Fylgja have no communities that are entirely their own. Therefore, they are named by their parents, who will often only have experience with common names, mostly human.
Fylgja Traits[edit]
Fey-touched humanoids that can manipulate dreams.
Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2, and one ability score of your choice increases by 1.
Age. Fylgja have the same lifespan as humans, maturing at the same rate and usually living less than a century.
Alignment. Fylgja are more human than they may let on, and have a similar diversity in alignment leanings. However, the slight touch of Fey in their physicality makes them a bit more likely to be Chaotic, or at least a bit less likely to be Lawful.
Size. Fylgja are slightly leaner and shorter than humans, averaging between 5 and 6 feet in height. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Chameleon Skin. Without an action, you can change your skin tone to any color, including simple patterns. You cannot reproduce images, complex patterns, glyphs, or writing in this way. You can do the same with your hair color and eye color.
Sturdy Dreamscape. You can't be put to sleep by magical means, and you have advantage on saving throws against spells that would manipulate dreams or cause you to act while sleeping. In addition, you have total control over your dreams, making it very difficult for a magical creature to influence your dreams in any tangible way.
Dream Hoard. You have the ability to mysteriously and magically absorb Tiny objects into your dreams while you are sleeping. If you are physically touching a nonmagical Tiny object while you are asleep, you can choose to absorb the object, which appears in your dream. You cannot change the object using your Sturdy Dreamscape trait. You can remove the object from your dream at any point, and it appears in one or both of your hands of your physical body. You cannot use this trait while you are being observed by any creature with 6 or more Intelligence.
Dream Walk. While you are dreaming, you can enter the dream of any sleeping creature within 60 feet of you. That creature does not become lucid, but you can use this ability to help the the creature fend off dream-based magical attacks, giving it advantage on any related saving throw. You cannot store objects in another creature's dreams unless that creature is also a fylgja. In addition, you cannot harm a creature solely through this trait, and you cannot be harmed by another creature's dreams. You do not have total control over another creature's dreams - only over your own. It is unlikely but not impossible that the creature will remember your dream invasion when you awaken.
Languages. You speak Common and one language of your choice, following in the traditions of your human relations.
