Fresno Nightcrawlers are white creatures that are very simple looking, heads with long legs and floating hands, no visible facial features or eyes, yet they can still speak and see fine. No one knows how or why.

History

Fresno Nightcrawlers don’t have much history, living as travelers that look for a settlement that is fitting for them, traveling across planes to look for one. They are rarely seen and some view them as animals or crypids, some don’t believe in them, some hunt them for their weird and unknown properties, and some don’t know they exist. They may engage in mischief if they can gain, say, a home from it. Otherwise, they don’t intend to harm anyone.

Attitudes and Beliefs

Fresno Nightcrawlers don’t have much of a society, living remote, away from each other rather than in a community. They don’t have parents for very long, being left alone to live by themselves at a young age, and they don’t travel to look for homes until they mature. They don’t believe in any higher power, rather focusing on the moment.

Fresno Nightcrawler Names

Fresno Nightcrawlers frequently give themselves names when they arrive in the material plane, as their previous labels are non traditional. They are given labels by their parents are often simple ways to identify themselves as they travel, but it isn’t always easy to say.

Fresno Nightcrawler Traits

Fresno Nightcrawlers are odd creatures that wander the planes.
Ability Score Increase. Your Wisdom score increases by 2 and your Dexterity score increases by 1.
Age. Fresno Nightcrawlers age rate and lifespan are unknown by other races, but you can live for centuries and are mature once you stop growing a few months after you’re born.
Alignment. Fresno Nightcrawlers are completely neutral, not leaning towards any alignment.
Size. Fresno Nightcrawlers range from 1 foot to 7 feet tall. You are tiny, small, or medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 40 feet.
Superior Darkvision. You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 120 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Magical adept. Due to traveling the different planes, you learn the different ways of magic. You know two cantrips of your choice from the sorcerer or wizard spell lists, and learn another at 11th level. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability.
Known terrain. Pick one of the following terrains. Arctic, Coast, Desert, Forest, Grassland, Mountain, Swamp, and Underdark. You have traveled in that terrain the most and aren’t slowed down by related difficult terrain.
Hands. Fresno Nightcrawlers don’t have arms, but instead small floating white hands to interact with things but you can’t wield heavy weapons. Your hands can float up to 20 feet away from you. If you try to strain yourself with the distance between you and your hands, you may gain a punishment (exhaustion, disadvantage, etc) as determined by the dm. If you do strain yourself, you can get to 30 feet. The further out they go, the weaker they become, and by 10 feet they cannot wield two handed weapons and by 20 feet they can’t throw anything and may struggle to hold on tightly to objects.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one exotic language of your choice. You can communicate with other Nightcrawlers with a telepathic language that is incomprehensible by other races. You can send small messages to other Nightcrawlers up to 20 feet away by looking at them. The language cannot be written or spoken.
