When this cantrip is used, the caster creates the audial illusion of footsteps. The sound is as if a human or humanoid was walking. The footfalls can be soft or fairly noisy. They can approach, move away from, follow, or otherwise seem to parallel a person or party. They must begin within 10 feet of the caster, but can thereafter move away up to a 20-foot distance, or can approach closer than 10 feet.
The caster softly vocalizes sounds similar to footsteps while pointing in the area in which they are to occur initially and subsequently.
