Fist of Thaël (5e Subclass)
Fist of Thaël[edit]
“ | Sometimes one must destroy themselves, in order to be forged anew. | ” |
—Monk of Thaël, Dwarf Monk, Quoted from a monk at the Temple of Thaël |
This prestige class comes from Monks who follow Thaël. It is a prestige class that focuses on the strength and destructive power of earth and rock and focuses on taking that into ones own body. It is a prestige class for monks that wish to be as rock is: solid, strong and unmoving.
Usually this is the class that all Monks of Thaël hope to one day achieve. Any monk however, who is respected in the eyes of this Deity of Stone, may attempt to achieve this class. It is extremely combat oriented with a focus on raw Strength and Constitution rather than Dexterity and Wisdom. It is meant for those whom believe first that destruction must come before renewal.
In order to become a Fist of Thaël, one must destroy themselves while praying to Thaël. This must be the means of the Earth. For example, some are crushed under a giant stone, while others are submerged in lava.
- Earth Born
At 3rd level, you ignore any type of difficult terrain that is non-magical as long as you are in contact with the ground. In addition, you learn how to speak, read and write Terran.
- Shockwave
At 3rd level, when you take the Attack action on your turn, you can spend 2 ki points to replace one of the attacks to create a shockwave by slamming the ground with your fists or stomp. All creatures in a 10-foot radius must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw, or take damage equal to two rolls of your martial arts die bludgeoning damage and are knocked prone. On a success, they take half damage and are not knocked.
At 11th level, the damage of this feature increases to three rolls of your Martial Arts die.
- Stoneform
Also at 3rd level level, you can transform your body into stone for a brief period of time. As a bonus action, you can spend 1 ki point to assume your stoneform, gaining the following benefits:
- Adapting Weapon. When you use Martial Arts to make an unarmed strike, you can choose whether you inflict slashing, bludgeoning, or piercing damage with the attack.
- Unmoving Stone. While in this form, you can't be moved against your will, as long as you are in contact with the floor.
- Stoneskin. You gain a bonus to your AC equal to your Constitution modifier (minimum of +1) while in this form.
The stoneform lasts for 10 minutes, but end earlier if you are incapacitated or die. You can also choose to shatter your stoneform off your body at the start of your turn, without taking an action. When you do so, each creature of your choice that you can see within 10 feet of you must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or take piercing damage equal to two rolls of your Martial Arts die.
- Heart of Stone
Starting at 6th level, you become resistant to fire damage and immune to effects that cause bleeding.
In addition, while you are in your Stoneform, having 0 hit points doesn’t knock you unconscious. You still must make death saving throws, and you suffer the normal effects of taking damage while at 0 hit points. However, if you would die due to failing death saving throws, you don’t die until your stoneform ends, and you die then only if you still have 0 hit points.
- Steelform
At 11th level, when you enter your Stoneform, you can choose to activate the Steel Form instead by spending 1 additional ki point. You gain the same benefits of Stoneform, plus the following ones:
- Steelclad. You can use your Deflect Projectile feature to reduce damage from melee weapon attacks.
- Forged Soul. You can use your Wisdom modifier, instead of your Constitution modifier for your Constitution saving throws.
- Molten Fists. You cause additional 1d6 fire damage with your unarmed strikes.
- Elemental
At 17th level, you become an elemental creature of stone. Your type changes to elemental. Unlike other elementals, you can still be brought back from the death trough resurrection spells, and your body isn't sent back to the primordial planes as the result of your death. In addition, you gain the following benefits when your Stoneform is active:
- Perfect Defense. You can use your action to become invulnerable to damage until the start of your next turn.
- Unbreakable. You gain resistance to non-magical slashing, piercing and bludgeoning damage, and to the damage of spells.
- Vulcanic Skin. You become immune to fire damage.
