A dimly glowing barrier surrounds you and moves with you. This barrier negates and absorbs all targeted or area-affecting spells of the 5 cardinal energy subtypes (namely of the Acid, Cold, Electricity, Fire and/or Sonic descriptor) within the barrier's area of effect, effectively shielding you and those within 10 feet of you from such spells. The barrier can only stop spells and spell-like effects. Supernatural abilities, like a dragon's breath weapon, are unaffected by this spell.

At your will, all the energy absorbed by the barrier may be released in the form of a single ray of crackling power. Doing so immediately cancels the barrier and ends the spell (which becomes effectively instantaneous from that point). You must succeed on a ranged touch attack with the ray to deal damage to a target. The ray deals 1d6 points of typeless damage for every spell level absorbed by the barrier, to a maximum amount of damage dice equal to your caster level (max 20d6). If the spell's duration ends, you may immediately fire the ray at a target of your choice. If you do not fire the ray before or at this time, the energy is lost and the spell ends.

The ray deals 1d8 points of damage per spell level absorbed if the barrier has absorbed damage from spells with three or more different energy descriptors, and 1d10 points per spell level if it has absorbed spells from all five.

Material Component: A flawless sapphire worth 200 gp or more. This gem focuses the energy absorbed, and is destroyed when that energy is converted to a ray.
