This creature looks like a dead dragon. Many of its black scales are missing, revealing a purplish skin, and its large wings are covered of worms on both sides. Instead of eyes, it has an unnatural reddish glow.
Dread dragons form an undead specie of true dragons. Despite the fact that they have no metabolism, they are perfectly fertile and continue to advance in age. They are very intelligent, even amongst dragons, and much more tougher than they look. The magic of their unlife makes them better spellcasters than many dragons, and gives them an unnatural resistance to magic. However, they are needing it due to the lack of really good saves. They really aren't as combative as the other kinds of dragons.
Sometimes confused with the dracoliches, the dread dragons are thought to descend from a specie of evil dragons. Some say than this specie became almost extinct before a few of them used powerful necromancy to maintain their lives. After three or four generations of death touched dragons, the specie transformed into a kind of undead creatures, the magic in their flesh giving them some traits of the living such as the need to rest, a normal fertility and the ability to become older. They still don't need to eat, drink or breathe. Furthermore, they are immortals or at least so long-living no one attained the Twilight yet.
Would a dread dragon ever be subject to a True resurrection spell, its constitution score would be 10 and it would retain its unholy toughness. It would become a Dragon (Altered Undead), so it would keep its undead Hit Dices. If it willingly accepts to die, it would become an undead again in not least than 24 hours (but won't return if it was killed against its will).
Combat[edit]
- Breath Weapon (Su)
- A dread dragon has one type of breath weapon, a cone of negative energy. Every creature in it must make a fortitude save or gain one negative level for every age category of the dragon. The fortitude save to remove those negative levels 24 hours later has the same DC. The save DC is charisma-based. Creatures healed by negative energy (such as any undead) won't regain hit points from this attack, but they are otherwise immune.
- Spellcasting
- The dread dragon casts spells as a sorcerer with the Death domain. It gains one extra spell slot at each spell level which it has access for domain spells (these bonus spells are divine spells), and it can use the granted power of this domain as a cleric of the same caster level. Furthermore, it can learn spells from the dread necromancer list. If those spells aren't on the sorcerer or Death domain list, the level of the spell increases by 1, to a maximum of 9th.
- Unholy toughness (Ex)
- A dread dragon gains a bonus to its hit points equal to its Charisma modifier x its Hit Dice.
