To create a character With flair, but with enough power to back it up in a fight.[edit]

I have been playing for several years with my current DM. The issue I seem to have a lot is creating a character with a decent amount of flair, aka interesting abilities, or showy powers, without losing out on the ability to stand up in a fight, or defend themselves. My greatest flair character ever was a rogue by the name of shade. His skill bonusses were through the roof for anything that included dex or cha, however, was an absolute pain magnet. My most recent character has the standing power, but not much flair to him, being a general fighter/barb mix. I would love to play something along the lines of a true duelist, fencing, parrying being generally untouchable, or something stoic like a cavlier, but how to play one with flair. Any ideas would be wonderfull. BTW yesI am new here, but have been coming to the site for almost a year now, and am glad you guys put all this work into ideas, clases, optimizations and such.

What it sounds like you want to play is a swashbuckler (the base class). What level characters do you normally play?

A fun character to play is a crafty wizard. Use lots of really versatile spells like Minor Image and Shrink Item, which are only bounded by your creativity. Even 1 level in wizard and the rest in swashbuckler can give you enough options to do really neat things.

Sounds fun, I have played a few of them before. My rogue was rogue 10/ disciple of beelzebub 10. I love playing skill based characters so I play a lot of rogues/bards, prestige classes like that. My fav prestige class is fortunes favorite, or as I call him the luck hero. Its just a lot of fun to play with stuff like, stealing, sneaky, rerolling for my benefit, etc. The flashy fast types. I rarely play fighters since they are just a little too plain. Barbs and paladins fall into that catagory too, they are just too predictable goody-two shoes (or rather our gm makes them that way), I used to play lots of sorcerors and wizards, but Its no fun playing them when half their feats are just plain removed from usability because my gm considers anything above level standard damage is power gaming.

Ahhhh the tome of battle how outlandishly flairfull ^^. I love the tome, but rarely play characters from it, never figured out why. I dun know why the spell caster wannabe one is in there though. Considering how sucky its maneuver renewall is. I am thinking about a gestalt character for a friends campaign tonight, thinking about ninja/warblade. Ahhhhh the fun. Oh well, probably wont work, but I can try. Have to fight his power gaming paranioa.
