So I read. A LOT. And I like the Warhammer Fantasy (WHF) and Warhammer 40k (40k) universes. So I've been playing around with a 5e Barbarian variant based around the "Slayers" from the WHF realm.

I figured they'd be generally Barbarians, with a heavily religious/outcast/shame backstory to fit with the Slayer idea from WHF, but the big difference would be their weapon - an axe or hammer (typically - slayers in WHF are uniquely dwarves seeking an honorable death in battle), aligned with the deity they owe allegiance to, that grants some massive bonuses/curses. After the first hostile act (damage dealt or received), the weapon is "awakened" and thirsts for blood. It gives +2 to attack rolls, 1D4 extra damage, and on Crits does 1D8 instead of 1D4. BUT, if the wielder goes a round without damaging anyone, they are dealt 1D6 necrotic damage as the weapon takes it's blood price. The weapon STAYS activated until there are no living (or nonliving) things tiny or larger within 60 ft for two rounds.

If the wielder is able to get the weapon blessed in a temple of their deity (starts at 1000gp and 12hrs, depending on the deity's alignment / overall disposition to a potential mass murderer killing in their name) all the damage dice increase up the scale- i.e. 1D4 becomes 1D6, 1D6 becomes 1D8, 1D8 becomes 1D10, and crits happen on 19s and 20s against all creatures larger than the wielder's size.

Sounds like a couple interesting ideas. I would suggest creating a subclass for barabarian and a magic item with your idea for it. Are you familiar with where to go to do that?
