Neutral Negative Energy Cleric[edit]

I am making a neutral negative energy cleric who will be specializing into raising the dead. I've considered the Death Domain, for obviouse reasons, and the Destruction Domain, because of flavor, and it looks like it is pretty powerful.

Does anyone have any suggestions for different domain possibilities, feat suggestions, DnD books to be read over that hold information about necromancer type classes, prestige or base, etc.

Basically I want some information about how to make an effective necromancer. Thank you!

Libris Mortis is a book you'd want to look over. It's all about undead and the ilk. Furthermore, you'll be wanting Spell Compendium for it's numerous spells that help you in controlling, buffing and doing stuff with undead. It also includes the "Deathbound Domain", increasing your controlled HD by one mulitplier (x2 to x3) and the "Undeath Domain" which grants you various domain spells for undead powers and Extra Turning as a feat.

I'd also suggest the Fell Energy metamagic feat (Libris Mortis) and Divine Metamagic(Persist Spell) (DMM is from Complete Divine, Persist Spell is from Complete Arcane or Mage, I believe). Fell Energy spells raise whoever it kills as an undead. There's also Fell Drain (Libris Mortis) which makes the spell deal 1 negative level as well.

I think there's a feat called Undead Leadership in Libris Mortis as well, that acts as though a Leadership feat, but you can get an undead companion instead. You'll have to check that for yourself.

The feat Tomb-Tained Soul allows you to be healed by negative energy (which your undead are also healed by), so you can make undead that burst with Negative Energy and they'll heal you and themselves. Remember that, Negative Energy heals Undead and hurts poor living creatures!

There are also Corpse Crafter feats in Libris Mortis that increase the power of your undead when you raise them, like +Str and extra HD, which are also useful.

Are you committed to playing a Cleric, though? If you're not, you could look into the Dread Necromancer class from Heroes of Horror, which is perfect for necromancy; it's their entire base idea. They're arcane casters, they get Charnel Touch (which deals negative damage, healing undead and hurting living creatures). But, if you're really into playing a Cleric, that's fine. Clerics are one of the top three classes, after all.

Anyway, back on track. As for the Undead you want to create, you want Wights and Allips. They have energy drain and they control whatever they kill via energy drain. What undead under your control control does not count towards your total HD limit of undead. This is often the way people get hundreds upon hundreds of undead under their control.

Anything else, I'll probably answer. But, here's a link to a Necromancer Handbook: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=599129
