Dire (5e Template)
From D&D Wiki
Dire[edit]
Have you ever wanted to make a dire frog? Maybe a dire gerbil?
- Prerequisite
The creature you are modifying must be of the beast type.
Changed Statistics[edit]
AC. The beast gains natural armor and its AC is increased by one.
HP. The beast's Hit Dice are increased by 3 and its hit points recalculated for increased Hit Die size and Constitution.
Size. The dire creature's size is increased by one category.
Speed. The beast's speed is increased by 10 feet.
Abilities. The beast's Strength score is increased by 5, its Constitution score is increased by 3, and its Charisma score is increased by one.
Actions[edit]
Natural Attacks. The beast's attack die size is increased by one (d4 becomes d6, d6 becomes d8 and so on). If the damage die is a d12, add one die to the pool instead of increasing the die size.
CR Calculation[edit]
There's a need for CR calculation for the increase in damage output, HP and AC.
Example:[edit]
Dire Octopus:
Medium beast: Unaligned
AC: 13
HP: 26
Speed: 15 ft, swim 30 ft
STR: 9(-1), DEX: 15(+2), CON: 14(+2), INT: 3(-4), WIS: 10(+0), CHA: 5(-3)
Skills: Perception +2, Stealth +4
Senses: darkvision 30 ft, passive Perception 12
Challenge: 1/8(25 XP)
Hold Breath. While out of water, the octopus can hold its breath for 30 minutes.
Underwater Camouflage. The octopus has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made while underwater.
Water Breathing. The octopus can breathe only underwater.
Actions
Tentacles. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: (1d4) bludgeoning damage. The target is grappled (escape dc 13) Until this grapple ends, the octopus can't use its tentacles on another target
Ink Cloud (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). A 5-foot-radius cloud of ink extends all around the octopus if it is underwater. The area is heavily obscured for 1 minute, although a significant current can disperse the ink. After releasing the ink, the octopus can use the Dash action as a bonus action.
