Hold Breath (Ex) | A mixosaurus can hold its breath for a number of rounds equal to 6 × its Constitution score before it risks drowning. |
Run (Ex) | A mixosaurus can "run" at up to 5 times its base swim speed. It does not benefit from this feat while it is on land. |
A fox-sized, roughly dolphin-shaped reptile tears through the clear water, its green and grey scales bathed in rippling lines of water-filtered sunlight. Its mouth is long and sharp-toothed, similar in shape to that of a gharial. It has large paddles at the front of its chest, with smaller paddles at the back. Its tail is similar to a shark's, as is its pointed dorsal fin. Its eyes are large and dilated, each bearing a striking yellow iris.
The mixosaurus is a small, opportunistic ichthyosaur which primarily hunts fish, eels, freshly-molted crabs, and other soft-skinned prey. It spends its time in coral reefs and on the sandy shoreline.
¹A mixosaurus has a +6 racial bonus on Spot checks, as well as a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.
Strategies and Tactics[edit]
Mixosauri are fiercely territorial. They will attack creatures of up to three times their size if they believe such creatures pose a threat to their position at the top of their reef's food chain. They will not, however, willingly fight to the death. If a mixosaurus is reduced to 4 hit points or less, it will flee; if its attacker pursues it, however, it will fight to its last. Mixosauri will not fight on land unless they absolutely must, though they do climb onto shore to bask in the sun, play-fight, or hunt prey which is most vulnerable out of the water (such as hatchling sea turtles).
Ecology[edit]
Environment: Mixosauri spend most of their time in the shallow water near the ocean coastline, hunting fish and eels which hide in coral reefs. During this time, they are primarily solitary (though rare exceptions are possible, with up to 6 individuals forming a small pack). Leading up to their mating season, they will gather into larger groups - called "crowds" - and swim along the shoreline until they encounter another crowd. These crowds will then spend several days courting (both in the shallows and on the shore), at the end of which roughly half of each crowd will join the other on their journey back to their hunting grounds. Outside the mating season, mixosauri are fiercely territorial, known to kill and eat members of their own species which take too much prey from their hunting grounds. These reptiles have a specialized interior pouch in which they incubate their soft-shelled eggs. When a mixosaurus hatchling escapes its egg, it swims out from this pouch and joins its mother until it has fully matured (though some remain far longer; this is the most common origin of a mixosaurus pack). A mixosaurus typically lays and incubates between 1 and 3 eggs at a time.
