Electrosensory (Ps) | A halszkaraptor can detect electric currents (and items which produce electric currents) within 60 ft. If an effect or ability would be capable of removing blindsense, it can be used to remove a halszkaraptor's electrosensory ability. |
A feathered dinosaur the size of a duck darts from the reeds and into the water. Its feathers are primarily white, though it bears brown stripes on its neck and back. At the end of its tail, which is shaped like that of a lizard, is a burst of long, downy feathers. These tail feathers are white with sparse black spots. Its three-clawed hands are webbed and orange, as are the three-clawed feet which terminate two white-feathered legs. Its snout is bare and colored alike to its hands and feet, with tiny hooked teeth visible in its open mouth; behind this muzzle is a pair of beady black eyes. The dinosaur dives beneath the water, returning with a small fish in its jaws. It coos victoriously.
The halszkaraptor is a flightless semiaquatic dinosaur roughly the size of a mallard. It is swift on land and excels at swimming. They hunt minnows, amphibians, and invertebrates which lay their eggs in or live near water (such as dragonflies).
¹A halszkaraptor has an innate +3 bonus to Listen and Spot, as well as a +6 bonus to Swim.
Strategies and Tactics[edit]
Halszkaraptors typically swim along the surface of still water or wade into the shallows, seizing the easiest prey available. It will not see any Diminutive or smaller creature as a threat, and will attempt to hunt such a creature (unless it is brightly-colored or bears a stinger). If a creature is Tiny or Small, the halszkaraptor will stand tall and spread its feathery arms, producing a shrill clicking hiss; if the perceived threat does not back down, the halszkaraptor is as likely to fight as it is to flee. If a creature is Medium or larger, the halszkaraptor will still make its territorial posture, though it will back away as it does so; if pushed into combat, it will always choose to flee such creatures.
Ecology[edit]
Environment: Halszkaraptors inhabit freshwater bodies within (or nearby) forests, as well as swamps. They are often hunted for their meat, which has a taste and texture somewhat like a cross between duck and alligator. They create nests of twigs, mud, and other such debris, in which they lay their eggs. These nests are then covered in a roof of the same material, hiding their young from potential predators and shielding them from the elements. These nests are typically within 20 ft. of the body of water in which the mother halszkaraptor spends most of her time hunting and scavenging.
