Dodge (Ex) During the anurognathus's action, it designates an opponent and receives a +1 dodge bonus to Armor Class against attacks from that opponent. It can select a new opponent on any action. A condition that makes it lose its Dexterity bonus to Armor Class (if any) also makes it lose dodge bonuses. Also, dodge bonuses stack with each other, unlike most other types of bonuses. This ability is drawn from this creature's innate feats (listed above).

A tiny bat-like sillhouette drops suddenly from a branch high above, spreading its wings and swooping expertly toward a fluttering cloud of moths. The moths scatter as the squat, membranous-winged reptile begins to beat its wings; some are caught in the creature's mouth. The creature chews loudly as it ascends again to its perch.

The anurognathus is a round-faced, wide-mouthed pterosaur with a wingspan of approximately 20 in (50 cm) and a nose-to-tail length of roughly 4 inches (9 cm). Its short head and needle-like teeth are well adapted for hunting Fine-sized aerial vermin (such as flies, lacewings, and moths).

¹An anurognathus has an innate +6 bonus to Hide and Move Silently checks, and an innate +3 bonus to Listen and Spot checks. It loses its bonuses to Listen and Spot if its blindsense is negated.

Strategies and Tactics[edit]

Anurognathi are ambush predators. They prefer to cling to the branches of trees, where they are well-camouflaged and obscured by leaves. When prey is detected, they drop swiftly and unfurl their membranous wings, rocketing through the air toward an unsuspecting meal.

Ecology[edit]

Environment: Anurognathi most often live in dense tropical forests (including jungles and rainforests) and warm swamps which have an abundance of trees. They can also be found in settled places within these environs, filling a similar niche to bats. They make their nests in hollow spots of trees, under the twisted roots of some species (provided there is a small entry and enough space inside), in hollow logs, or, when found in settled places, nestled in the attics and rafters of spacious buildings. They are short-lived (only surviving about 3 years in the wild, or up to 5 years in captivity), but they lay clutches of soft-shelled eggs which can number between 4 and 12 at a time. An anurognathus typically has only one clutch, which they raise for roughly 6 months after hatching. After this point, the young will have learned to hunt, and their flying muscles will be well-developed; they will be ready to survive on their own.

Familiars[edit]

If a sorcerer or wizard chooses an anurognathus as a familiar, they gain a +3 bonus to Hide checks.
