Created long ago by a kingdom whose name has been lost to history, the deathmask troopers were created during its final days as a desperate bid to stave off some encroaching threat. In the end, they may have only hastened the fall. Forged using a mix of metal, alchemy, and soul harvesting, the inanimate constructs were transported to a battlefield to consume the anima of mortals as fuel to animate, then kept killing to stay up. In the millennia since those forgotten battles, most deathmask troopers have fallen to ruin, but some still wander the wastes of their former homeland, looking for blood to lubricate their workings until their masters return, though how they would recognize them is another question. Some grim rumors even speak of a vast force of deathmask troopers built but never deployed waiting in some decrepit ruin, waiting for a powerful sacrifice to activate. |
