Deadlightkin (5e Race)
From D&D Wiki
Deadlightkin[edit]
"When you’re a kid you think the universe revolves around you. You think that you’ll always be protected and cared for. Then, one day, you realize that’s not true. Because when you’re alone as a kid, the monsters see you as weaker. You don’t even know they’re getting closer, till it’s too late." -Unknown warlock
Physical Description[edit]
Deadlightkin are notably able to change into any form they wish, as long as it is vaguely humanoid. They do however prefer to stick to one form when not fighting or hunting, often one that fits their personality, or how they would like to be perceived on a regular basis.
History[edit]
Deadlightkin can never agree on what plane they came from, but they all agree on the same basic story. Eons ago, on a plane beyond mortal comprehension, titanic beings of unfathomable size swam through the void. One of such beings was know as the Greatest Deadlight, a being of death, terror, and destruction, resembling something like a spider. Another being, or peace and life, agreed to look somewhat like a turtle, cast out the Greatest Deadlight, as punishment for Its crimes. Unable to exist in Its current form, It was shattered into thousands of beings, each inheriting some of Its power, and having varying levels of sentience. Most were clever animals, hunting down and terrifying prey, although some hundred or so retained sentience, becoming terrifying in their own right, feared in a way only a creature like a mind flayer could be.
Society[edit]
Due to their rarity, being cast across the multiverse, and most of them being feral beasts, they have very little society to speak of. They often enjoy living in crowded towns, cities, and villages due to the ample prey, humanoid and animal alike. They either hide away in sewers, alleys, and abandoned buildings, or by pretending to be regular, if odd and creepy people.
Deadlightkin Names[edit]
Deadlightkin don't have any form of racial naming system, and steal from any that they see as appropriate, in any gender they wish. Names: Pennywise, Tom, Athena, God, Vulpes, Mary, Kriznarb the IV, Mr. Widemouth, The Heat Death Of The Universe
Deadlightkin Traits[edit]
I'm every nightmare you've ever had. I am your worst dream come true! I am everything you ever were afraid of!
Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2, and one other score of your choice increases by 1.
Age. Deadlightkin seem to be effectively immortal as long as they keep feeding regularly.
Alignment. Deadlightkin tend toward evil and chaotic alignments, although they have the capability to choose any other alignment.
Size. Deadlightkin can shapeshift to a certain extent, to sizes of barely 4 feet to well over 7 feet tall. Your size is determined by your Metamorphosis trait.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Aberration. You are an aberration instead of a humanoid.
Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Feed on Fear. As an action, you can consume the corpse of a creature with an Intelligence of 4 or higher who was frightened by you when they died. You must do this every 3 days, and at the end of each day beyond that limit, you automatically suffer one level of exhaustion (this cannot be removed until you consume a corpse in this way). You do not need to eat or drink.
Metamorphosis. When you finish a short or long rest, you can cause your size to be Medium or Small, and can transform your appearance. You decide what you look like, including your height, weight, facial features, sound of your voice, hair length, coloration, and distinguishing characteristics, if any. You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, though none of your statistics change. You also don’t appear as a creature of a different size than you, and your basic shape stays the same; if you're bipedal, you can’t use this spell to become quadrupedal, for instance. You remain in this appearance until you change it again or die.
Natural Weapons. Your forms always have parts that you can use to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with them, the strike deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier damage, instead of the damage normal for an unarmed strike. You choose the damage type this unarmed strike deals from bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing, and can change it when you change form using the Metamorphosis trait.
Nightmare. As an action you can force a creature who can see you within 30 feet to make a Charisma saving throw (DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier). On a successful save the target is immune to this feature until you finish a long rest. On a failed save the target becomes frightened by you for 1 minute, and can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect early on a success.
Scary. You have proficiency in the Performance or Intimidation skill.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language of your choice.
Feat: Deadlight Eyes[edit]
Prerequisite: 5th Level, Deadlightkin.

Furthermore, you can see into the Ethereal Plane within the same range.
