D&D Wiki talk:About
Proposal[edit]
I was wondering if it would be alright to perhaps discuss possibly adding to this page. A small introduction about what D&Dwiki is and it's goals and history, etc. etc. Good for new users. Also a note: February is misspelled on the page.
- Proposed Text Rough Draft
D&D Wiki was created on February 4th, 2006, by Green Dragon with the help of Blue Dragon. Green Dragon enjoyed participating on the Wizards of the Coast message boards, but noticed that many wonderful homebrew content was lost to the boards as there was no easy way to store all of it.
The wiki originally started by compiling all of the Open Game Content and System Reference Document material that Wizards of the Coast allowed the site to have posted. This was followed up by beginning a project to move over some documented and well-loved homebrew material from the WotC forums. As the wiki began to grow, users continued to add content directly to D&D wiki.
By D&D wiki's first birthday in February of 2007, the site enjoyed a growing community with additional volunteer administrators and ran a successful fundraiser to improve the equipment the site ran on - a much needed improvement as the site was growing daily. The year would also feature a growing base of users and preparations to have the site ready for the then-recently announced fourth edition. A chat room, named The Tavern, opened this year and enjoyed a rotating cast of characters assisting new users and playing by post.
New layouts and logo greeted D&D wiki for its second birthday in 2008, while the wiki also changed over to a new Semantic Wiki system, giving the site many more wonderful abilities and features. D&Dwikians said goodbye to Dungeons & Dragons creator Gary Gygax by implementing a featured article system to showcase some of the great items that users had placed on the site.
The calendar year of 2009 welcomed D&D wiki with many great milestones. Even before the third birthday, the main page of the wiki had received one million views and over two thousand registered members of the community. By 2011 D&D wiki enjoyed over 50,000 pages, making it the largest Dungeons & Dragons wiki in existence. The sites success is shown in the fact that its been viewed over 75 million times, and the wiki entered the Alexa rankings as one of the top one hundred thousand websites. The D&D wiki community grew in size to over 3,500 registered users. High profile gamers such as Wil Wheaton, Vin Diesel, and Kevin Smith have all linked to articles on D&D wiki while discussing gaming.
The future is always impossible to predict, but D&D wiki is still striving to provide a place where gamers may come to learn about the game, find material for their games, place to submit their own creations, or to be a part of a community of gaming enthusiasts.
