Cursed, 2nd Variant (5e Background)

Stub Logo.png This page is incomplete and/or lacking flavor. Reason: This background's feature seems to imply a very specific method of curse, having the "mark of whom you have failed" and whatnot. It also has a feature very different from the flavor of just "bad luck," going as far as possibly disrupting your rest every night. Overall, this could use some more cohesive writing and maybe even a re-naming. It doesn't really discuss what you did before you became an adventurer either.

Cursed[edit]

Woe is you, unfortunate soul. You have been cursed, whether from birth or some unfortunate series of events, and this curse holds sway over your life. You are not sure if the curse can be broken, but certainly your life would be much more pleasant without it. Each time the fates seem to be working in your favor some disaster strikes and suddenly all your efforts seem thwarted. You may at times feel helpless against the power of this curse, or maybe you reject these dark fortunes and strive against them. In the end though, luck is not on your side. It is up to you and your DM to determine what kinds of effects your curse may have on you beyond what is detailed in this background.

Skill Proficiencies: Religion, Survival

Languages: Choose one from the following list: Abyssal, Infernal, Celestial or Deep Speech

Equipment: A set of dark common clothes, a small belt pouch containing 5 gp, and the dagger of your curse

Feature: Dark branding.[edit]

People that look at your branding, actively shun you. Your curse is a mark of whom you have failed.

People will actively try to kill you. Every night, when you go to sleep. You need your dm to roll an encounter for you. Unless you succeed. Your DM defies the dice, and the conditions to succeed. If you win against this foe, than you won’t need to roll for the next 2 weeks.

You are drawn to others who are under the influence of a curse or similar magics. NPCs that are suffering from a curse will be drawn to you, and you to them. In addition to this, you have an eye for curses similar to your own. You can determine if a curse shares its origin with your own (demonic, fey, primal, etc.) due to your lengthy time spent under the influence of the curse.

d6 Ideal
1 Order. Following orders is sometimes a good option, that might lead in less pain. (Lawful)
2 Pain. Feeling pain reminds people of the fact that they are still alive, so it’s good to give them that feeling. [A fact that they forget too easy] (Evil)
3 Freedom. If you have the possibility to do everything you want, what could stop you from doing that? (Chaotic)
4 Hate. Everyone not from the Abyss does not deserve to live. (Evil)
5 Integrity. Reducing the pain of someone means less pain in the entire world. (Good)
6 Destruction. Chaos is more likely than order. Let's help with this process. (Chaotic)

1 There is no way I'll go back to the abyss. If there is a way to survive, I will take it, even when that means I have to leave others behind.
2 Thinking about the abyss always makes me angry.
3 Everyone is hateable.
4 I have an explosive nature. It's pretty easy to trigger me.
5 Sometimes I talk to myself. The time in the abyss was long and lonely...
